The Day My Bum Went Psycho is a super funny book for kids by an Australian author named Andy Griffiths. In many English-speaking countries, "bum" is a slang word for your bottom. In North America, they use the word "butt" instead. So, the book is called The Day My Butt Went Psycho there.
The book has cool drawings by Nicole Arroyo. She also illustrated some of Andy Griffiths' other books, like the Just! series.

Story of the Book
The story is about a boy named Zack Freeman. His bum keeps detaching itself and running away! One night, Zack follows his bum. He then discovers a secret plot. All the bums in the world plan to take over!
Their big plan is to create a giant, worldwide fart. They want to build up a huge amount of gas in a place called the "Bumcano." When the Bumcano blows, all humans will fall unconscious. While people are out cold, the bums will switch places with their heads!
Luckily, Zack meets a "Bum-hunter" named Silas Sterne. Silas's daughter, Eleanor, is also a brave bum fighter. They teach Zack about this crazy world where bums are always a danger. To stop the Bumcano from erupting, the friends get help. They team up with characters like the Kisser, the Kicker, the Smacker, and Ned Smelly.
The characters go on many wild adventures. They visit places like the "Great Windy Desert." They also encounter "flying bum squadrons." They even meet famous bums like Stenchgantor The Great Unwiped Bum and the Great White Bum.
This book is full of funny toilet humour. It has won many Children's Choice awards in Australia because kids love it!
The story continues in two more books. These are Zombie Bums from Uranus (from 2003) and Bumageddon: The Final Pongflict (from 2005).
Main Characters
- Zack Freeman - He is a twelve-year-old boy. The whole story is centered around him and his runaway bum.
- Duce (Zack Freeman's "bum") - This is Zack's own bum. It tries to get other bums to join the midnight bum rally. It wants to fill the Bumcano and knock out all humans. But Duce is shocked to learn the Great White Bum was lying. In the end, Duce becomes Zack's best friend.
- Eleanor Sterne - She is a very strong bum fighter. Eleanor wants to get rid of the Great White Bum. This is because it attacked her family when she was five. She is the daughter of the famous bum hunter, Silas Sterne. Eleanor is also a friend of the B-team. She has an artificial bum.
- Silas Sterne - He is known as the bravest and best bum hunter ever. He started Silas Sterne's Bum Fighting Academy. His wife was killed by the Great White Bum. Silas has caught many dangerous bums. He used to be part of the famous B-team and was friends with Ned Smelly.
- Kicker - He is a strong bum fighter. Kicker is great at fighting bums with his feet. He is part of the famous B-team. Kicker always wants to kick bums. He is a huge man with a thick beard and very big feet. He wears Australian rules football clothes.
- Smacker - She is a bum fighter who is skilled at fighting bums with her hands. Smacker is also a member of the famous B-team. She is the most sensible person on the team. She is a good friend to Eleanor. Smacker is a big woman with black hair and huge hands.
- Kisser - He is a charming bum fighter. Kisser is very good at fighting bums with his lips. He is also a member of the famous B-team. Kisser was kidnapped by some bad bums. He secretly started helping the bums. He even tried to stop the B-team and hurt them. He is last seen being pulled down by giant maggots.
- Ned Smelly - He used to be a bum fighter. He got his name after meeting Stenchgantor, the Great Unwiped Bum. Ned lives in a small shack in the Great Windy Desert. He eats strange plants and insects. After eating special energy bars, his bad smell went away.
- Captain Brown - He manages a shelter for bums.
- Stenchgantor - Also known as the Great Unwiped Bum. Stenchgantor was the ugliest, stinkiest bum around. It had warts and lots of hair. It lives in the Brown Forest. It is blind and finds victims using its sense of smell.
- The Great White Bum - This is a huge and evil bum. Some people think it was created by a nuclear accident. Others believe it has been around for many years. One writer even suggested it was an alien from space! Zack Freeman forced it off Earth and sent it flying into space.
- Judi and James Freeman - These are Zack's parents. In the first book, they are traveling musicians. Later, in Zombie Bums from Uranus, it is revealed they are also bum-fighters.
TV Show Adaptation
A television series based on these books started airing. It was shown on the Australian channel Nine Network. It also aired on the Canadian channels Teletoon and Télétoon starting June 12, 2014.
Live Play Adaptation
On January 19, 2019, a play based on the book premiered. It was written by Dave Lowe and shown at the Brisbane Arts Theatre. Young actors performed the roles in this two-act play.
