Darwin - Descent of Man (1871)
Title page of the first edition

The Descent of Man, and selection in relation to sex is an important book written by Charles Darwin. It was first published in 1871.

This book was Darwin's second major work about how living things change over time, a process called evolution. His first famous book was On the Origin of Species, published in 1859.

In On the Origin of Species, Darwin said very little about human beings. He only wrote one sentence: "Light will be thrown on the origin of man and his history."

But in The Descent of Man, Darwin focused on human evolution. He explored how humans might have developed from earlier forms of life. He also explained his idea of sexual selection. This is about how animals choose their mates, which can affect how a species changes over time. Darwin believed these two ideas were closely linked.

Darwin's Ideas on Human Evolution

Darwin's book helped people understand that humans are also part of the natural world. He showed how the same rules of evolution that apply to animals and plants also apply to us. He looked at many things, like our bodies, our minds, and even our feelings.

How Sexual Selection Works

Sexual selection is a key idea in The Descent of Man. It explains how certain features develop in animals because they help them find a partner. For example, a peacock's big, colorful tail helps it attract a mate. This tail might not help the peacock survive, but it helps it reproduce. Over time, these features become more common in the species.

Other Important Books from That Time

Before Darwin published The Descent of Man, other scientists were also thinking about human origins. In the years between Darwin's two big books, some important works came out:

Both of these books were published in 1863. They helped prepare the way for Darwin's detailed look at human evolution.
