The Enchanted Castle is a children's fantasy novel. It was written by Edith Nesbit and first published in 1907.
Story of the Castle
The story is about a magical castle in the countryside. Three children named Jerry, Jimmy, and Kathy find it. They discover the castle while exploring during their school holidays.
The castle looks like something out of a fairy tale. It has a lake, beautiful trees, and white towers. In the middle of a rose garden maze, they discover a sleeping "princess."
The "princess" tells them the castle is full of magic. She shows them many treasures, including a magic ring. She claims it makes things invisible. When the ring actually makes her disappear, she gets scared. She then admits she is not a princess. Her name is Mabel, and she is the housekeeper's niece. She was just pretending to be a princess.
The children soon learn that the ring has other magical powers. For example, it can bring their "Ugly-Wugglies" to life. These were dummies they made for a play. The children eventually figure out that the ring grants their own wishes. However, the wishes often go wrong. This happens because they don't say exactly what they want.
The Enchanted Castle was written for both kids and adults. It mixes the imaginative games children play with a touch of magic. It is similar to Nesbit's other books like The Story of the Treasure Seekers.
TV Show Adaptation
The Enchanted Castle was made into a TV mini-series. The BBC created it in 1979. This TV show has not been released on DVD or VHS in the UK. However, a DVD was released in Australia in 2013.
