Harold Robert Millar was born in Dumfriesshire, Scotland. Before becoming an artist, he first studied civil engineering. But he soon decided that art was his true calling!

He went to art schools in Wolverhampton and Birmingham. After his studies, he started his career drawing for popular magazines. These included Punch and Good Words.

Bringing Stories to Life

Millar drew pictures for many different kinds of stories. He illustrated fables for The Strand Magazine. He also brought to life many fairy tale collections, like The Golden Fairy Book and The Ruby Fairy Book.

He worked with many famous British writers of his time. These included Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch, Robert Louis Stevenson, and Rudyard Kipling.

A Special Partnership with E. Nesbit

One of Millar's most important partnerships was with the author E. Nesbit. She wrote many beloved children's fantasy books. Millar was often called "the most sympathetic and perhaps the most talented of her illustrators." This means he truly understood her stories and drew pictures that perfectly matched them.
