The Exo Building is a tall office building in Dublin, Ireland. It has 17 floors and stands near the River Liffey. This building is right next to the 3Arena, a famous concert venue.

In 2021, the Exo Building became the tallest office building in the Republic of Ireland. It stands 73 meters (about 240 feet) high. Its name, "Exo," comes from its unique outer structure, called an exoskeleton. This design looks like the old industrial cranes and gantries found in the port area.

An Post, Ireland's postal service, has agreed to be the main company using the building.

Building History

The area where the Exo Building stands was once part of Dublin Bay. It had small islands that appeared at low tide. This changed after the North Wall was built in 1717. The land was then reclaimed from the sea.

The exact spot of the building was at the edge of this new land. It faced the open sea on one side and the mouth of the River Liffey on the other. This was before the modern Dublin Port was built.

From Railway Yard to Concert Venue

Later, this site was used by the Great Southern and Western Railway Company. It was a railway and support yard for the Point Depot facility. Trains and goods carts used to move through here to the port.

In the 20th century, the railway yard was no longer used. The main warehouse became a music and concert venue. The nearby yard became an empty space, no longer used for trains.

The Watchtower Project

The Exo Building was built on a site that had a different plan before. There were plans for a 40-story residential skyscraper called The Watchtower. This project was later made smaller, down to 32 stories.

Planning permission for The Watchtower was given in 2006. Construction started soon after. The underground basement and foundations were almost finished. However, the project stopped because of problems in the Irish property market.

What Happened Next

For a while, the empty space was used for fun attractions. These included an underground bar and the Wheel of Dublin. These temporary attractions were popular because the site was so close to the 3Arena.

The original owner's loans were taken over in 2013. Soon after, new managers were put in charge of the site. This led to the current Exo Building project.
