The Hanging Gale is a four-part TV show that first aired in 1995. It was shown on RTÉ One in Ireland and BBC1 in the United Kingdom. This series was a team effort between British and Irish TV companies.
The story takes place in 1846 in County Donegal, Ireland. This was at the very start of a terrible time called the Great Famine. The show stars four real-life brothers: Joe McGann, Paul McGann, Mark McGann, and Stephen McGann. The idea for the show came from Joe and Stephen McGann, who were looking into their family's history.
The name of the show, 'The Hanging Gale', comes from an old practice in Ireland. Landlords would sometimes let new renters wait six months to pay their rent. They expected the rent to be paid once the crops were harvested and sold.
