The Hanna-Barbera New Cartoon Series was a popular animated TV show from 1962. It was also known as The New Hanna-Barbera Cartoon Series or The Wally Gator Show. This show was made by Hanna-Barbera Productions, a famous animation studio. It was a special collection of cartoons shown on different TV channels.
The show was made up of three short cartoon stories. Each story featured funny animal characters. These cartoons were not connected to each other. They each had their own opening and closing music.
What Was Inside the Show?
This cartoon package included three different segments:
- Wally Gator: This cartoon followed the adventures of a friendly alligator. He often tried to escape from the zoo.
- Touché Turtle and Dum Dum: This segment featured a brave turtle who was a fencing hero. He always helped others with his sidekick, Dum Dum.
- Lippy the Lion & Hardy Har Har: This cartoon was about a cheerful lion and his gloomy hyena friend. They often got into funny situations.
The show had 52 episodes in total. Each episode contained one story from Wally Gator, one from Touché Turtle, and one from Lippy the Lion. There were no extra animations between the cartoons. This made it different from other Hanna-Barbera shows of that time.
The name The New Hanna-Barbera Cartoon Series helped people know it was different. Other Hanna-Barbera cartoons, like Ruff and Reddy or Yogi Bear, had short animations connecting their stories. This new show did not.
At first, a company called Screen Gems helped share the show. Later, the Hanna-Barbera studio was bought by Taft Broadcasting Company. They then helped distribute the cartoons. Over time, Hanna-Barbera got back the rights to many of its older shows.
The cartoons from this series were later shown in different ways. Wally Gator became part of another show called Magilla Gorilla and Friends. This aired on USA Network from 1987 to 1991. Touche Turtle and Lippy the Lion were shown on The Family Channel. Eventually, all these cartoons found a home on Cartoon Network and later Boomerang.
