The Hardy Boyz are a famous professional wrestling tag team. The team is made up of real-life brothers Jeff Hardy and Matt Hardy. They are currently signed with Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA). There, they hold the TNA World Tag Team Championship for the fourth time. They also appear in WWE on its NXT brand.

The brothers started wrestling together in 1995. They competed on the independent circuit, winning titles like the NWA 2000 Tag Team Championship. They also created their own wrestling company, OMEGA Championship Wrestling. In 1997, they signed with the World Wrestling Federation (WWF), which is now known as WWE. In 2000, Lita joined them, forming the popular group Team Xtreme.

The Hardy Boyz are known for holding many different tag team championships. They are the only team to have won the WWE/World, WCW, TNA, ROH, Raw, and SmackDown Tag Team Championships. Many people believe they helped make tag team wrestling exciting again during the Attitude Era. In 2012, WWE recognized them as one of the greatest tag teams ever.

After a break in 2002, the brothers reunited in 2006. They teamed up on and off over the years. They returned to WWE in 2017 and won the Raw Tag Team Championship at WrestleMania 33. In 2019, they won the SmackDown Tag Team Championship. However, they had to give up the titles due to Jeff's leg injury.

Both brothers have also won major championships as single wrestlers. Each has become a world champion on their own. In 2017, they held seven tag team championships from seven different companies at the same time. This included the ROH World Tag Team Championship and the TNA World Tag Team Championship. They are the only team to have held these titles at the same time.

The Hardy Boyz became famous for their exciting matches. They were especially known for their innovative ladder matches and Tables, Ladders and Chairs (TLC) matches. They had memorable rivalries with teams like The Dudley Boyz and Edge and Christian. Overall, they have won 13 world tag team championships. This includes six WWE's original Tag Team Championships.

Wrestling Journey

Early Career (1995–1998)

The Hardy brothers started their tag team in 1995. This was after Jeff's debut in a local wrestling group. This group later became the Organization of Modern Extreme Grappling Arts (OMEGA). The duo wrestled in many independent shows across North Carolina. They won the OMEGA Tag Team Championship and the NWA 2000 Tag Team Championship.

Their first match as a team in the WWF was in May 1996. They faced The New Rockers. They later wrestled against other teams like Smoking Gunns and The Headbangers.

Rise to Fame in WWE (1998–2009)

Becoming Popular (1998–1999)

After signing with WWE in 1998, they trained with Dory Funk, Jr..

The Hardy Boyz became a popular tag team after a win on Sunday Night Heat in September 1998. Their exciting, high-flying style quickly gained them many fans. They became serious contenders for the Tag Team Championship. They were managed by Michael Hayes. On July 5, 1999, they defeated The Acolytes to win their first WWF Tag Team Championship. However, they lost the title back to The Acolytes later that month.

They later stopped working with Hayes and briefly joined Gangrel as part of The New Brood. They won a series of matches against Edge and Christian. This series was called the Terri Invitational Tournament. They won the services of Terri Runnels as their manager by winning the first-ever tag team ladder match at No Mercy in October. This match was very exciting and earned both teams a standing ovation. This started a long rivalry between the Hardy Boyz and Edge and Christian. During this time, Lita also joined them, forming a strong trio.

Team Xtreme Era (2000–2002)

With Lita, Matt and Jeff formed Team Xtreme. Their name showed their "extreme" and high-flying wrestling style. In 2000, they had big rivalries with Edge and Christian and The Dudley Boyz. They competed in many ladder matches and TLC matches.

They faced Edge and Christian and the Dudley Boyz at WrestleMania 2000 in a triple threat tag team ladder match. Edge and Christian won the title in that match. The Hardyz continued to challenge for the titles.

At Unforgiven in September, the Hardy Boyz defeated Edge and Christian in a steel cage match to win the titles for the second time. They lost the titles but won them back the next night.

The Hardyz continued their rivalry with Edge and Christian and also with Right to Censor. At Survivor Series in November, the Hardyz and the Dudleyz won a Survivor Series elimination match against Edge and Christian and Right to Censor.

The next month at WrestleMania X-Seven, the Hardy Boyz competed in another TLC match. Edge and Christian won again with help from Rhyno.

In October 2001, the Hardy Boyz won the WCW Tag Team Championship. They lost it two weeks later. In November, they won the WWF Tag Team Championship again. At Survivor Series, they lost the title to the Dudleyz in a steel cage match. This led to a storyline where the brothers fought each other. Jeff won their match at Vengeance. The storyline ended in January 2002, and they reunited.

At No Way Out in February 2002, the Hardy Boyz competed in a tag team match. At WrestleMania X8 in March, they challenged for the WWF Tag Team Championship but did not win. They then started a rivalry with Brock Lesnar and Paul Heyman. At Judgment Day, the Hardy Boyz lost to Lesnar and Heyman.

Team Breakup and Departures (2002–2005)

The team split up after this. Jeff started a storyline with The Undertaker. Matt was moved to the SmackDown! brand. He called himself "Matt Hardy Version 1". He later won the Cruiserweight Championship in February 2003. Jeff was released from WWE in April 2003 due to personal issues.

Jeff later joined Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA) in 2004. He was suspended in 2006 for missing events before leaving. In April 2005, Matt was also released from WWE due to issues related to social media. He was rehired a few months later.

Jeff returned to WWE in August 2006. In November, it was announced that Matt and Jeff would team up again. This was their first time together in over four years. They joined Team DX at Survivor Series. The Hardys defeated MNM at December to Dismember. This started a rivalry between the two teams.

At Armageddon in December, The Hardys competed in a four-team ladder match for the WWE Tag Team Championship. They did not win the titles. The Hardys settled their rivalry with MNM at the Royal Rumble in January 2007, winning for the second time.

In April 2007, the Hardys won the World Tag Team Championship for the sixth time. They won a ten-team battle royal. They defended their titles against Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch at Backlash and Judgment Day. At One Night Stand in June, the Hardys kept their titles in a ladder match. The next night, they lost their championship to Cade and Murdoch. The Hardys had a rematch but were unsuccessful.

The Hardys returned to WWE in November 2007. They reunited again in 2008. They teamed up on Raw and SmackDown, winning both matches.

Rivalry and Second Departure (2009)

The Hardy Boyz started 2009 with a win. This was their last match as a team for a while. Matt lost his ECW championship. At the Royal Rumble, Matt interfered in Jeff's match. He hit Jeff with a steel chair, allowing Edge to win the WWE Championship. Matt then announced the team was breaking up. He said he no longer saw Jeff as his partner or brother.

Matt and Jeff began a storyline rivalry. They faced each other in an Extreme Rules match at WrestleMania 25, which Matt won. They also had a stretcher match, which Matt won again. Matt was then moved to the Raw brand. Despite this, they faced each other in an "I Quit" match at Backlash, which Jeff won. Matt also interfered in Jeff's World Heavyweight Championship match.

In August 2009, Jeff and Matt reunited as the Hardys. They teamed with John Morrison to win a six-man tag team match. The next week, Jeff lost a "Loser Leaves the WWE" match and left the company. Matt was released from his WWE contract in October 2010.

Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (2010–2017)

Immortal Group (2010–2011)

Jeff returned to TNA in January 2010. He won the TNA World Heavyweight Championship in October with help from Hulk Hogan and Eric Bischoff. They formed a group called Immortal. In January 2011, Matt made his TNA debut as a surprise member of Immortal. He defeated Rob Van Dam. The Hardy Brothers reunited as villains for the first time since 1999. They defeated Van Dam and Mr. Anderson. Immortal later ended their ties with Jeff. Matt was released from TNA in August 2011 due to personal conduct issues.

TNA World Tag Team Champions (2014–2015)

Matt returned to TNA in mid-2014. The Hardys challenged for the TNA World Tag Team Championship but were unsuccessful. They competed in a best-of-three series for the title against The Wolves and Team 3D. The Wolves won the final match. In October, The Hardys won a tournament to become the number one contenders for the TNA World Tag Team Championship.

In March 2015, The Hardys won the Ultimate X match for the vacant TNA World Tag Team Championship. However, they had to give up the titles because Jeff suffered a broken leg.

In August 2016, Matt, known as "Broken Matt," sent Jeff, known as "Brother Nero," on a mission. He wanted Jeff to help them win the Impact Wrestling World Tag Team Championship. The Hardys won a ladder match to earn a chance to challenge Decay for the titles. In September, the Hardys invited Decay to their home for a special match. Broken Matt became a fan favorite during this match.

In October 2016, at Bound for Glory, they defeated Decay to become TNA World Tag Team Champions for the second time. They defended their titles against Decay again. The Hardys announced their departure from TNA in February 2017. They left the company while still holding the TNA World Tag Team Championships.

Starting in April 2014, the brothers reunited on the independent wrestling scene.

In 2017, the Hardys went on a tour to various wrestling companies. This was called the "Expedition of Gold." They wanted to win other tag team titles to prove they were the "greatest tag team in all of space and time." During this tour, Matt and Jeff won tag team titles in Mexico, West Virginia, Maryland, and Chile.

The Hardys' contracts with TNA Wrestling ended in February 2017. They were still TNA Tag Team Champions in the storylines. They offered to give up the titles, but TNA declined.

On March 4, 2017, The Hardys debuted in Ring of Honor (ROH). They defeated The Young Bucks for the ROH World Tag Team Championship. This meant they were recognized as both TNA and ROH World Tag Team Champions at the same time. They lost the ROH titles back to The Young Bucks in a ladder match in April. After the match, Jeff said, "We'll fade away and classify ourselves as obsolete," referencing their "Broken" characters.

The "Broken Hardy" storyline was later stopped. The Hardys did not appear on Impact Wrestling after their contracts ended.

Matt said that the Hardy Boyz had completed their "Expedition of Gold" by winning the Raw Tag Team Championship. They kept the titles at Payback but lost them at Extreme Rules in a steel cage match. They failed to win them back at Great Balls of Fire.

In September, Jeff suffered a shoulder injury and was out of action for several months. Matt then wrestled as a single competitor. In February 2019, the Hardy Boyz reunited on SmackDown Live. In April, they defeated The Usos to win the SmackDown Tag Team Championships. This made them the first team to win all three of WWE's main tag team championships (World, Raw, and SmackDown). However, they had to give up the titles because Jeff suffered another leg injury. While Jeff was recovering, Matt left WWE in March 2020 and joined All Elite Wrestling. Jeff later left WWE in December 2021.

All Elite Wrestling (2022–2024)

Matt announced that he and Jeff would reunite for their "Final Run" in wrestling. Jeff debuted for AEW in March 2022, reuniting the brothers. They wrestled their first AEW match, defeating Private Party.

In April 2022, the brothers won the IWC Tag Team Championship. In May 2022, Jeff Hardy suffered a concussion-like injury during a match. In June 2022, Jeff Hardy was suspended from AEW due to personal conduct issues. He returned in April 2023 to help his brother, reuniting the team. In April 2024, Matt's contract with AEW ended, and he decided not to renew it. Jeff also left AEW two months later when his contract expired.

Return to TNA (2024–present)

Matt made a surprise return to TNA in April 2024 at Rebellion. He returned with his "Broken" character and attacked TNA World Champion Moose. Matt challenged Moose for the championship but did not win. After the match, Jeff made a surprise return to TNA to help Matt. In October 2024, the Hardys won their third TNA World Tag Team Championship. They defeated two other teams in a Full Metal Mayhem match at Bound for Glory.

The Hardys later lost their TNA World Tag Team Championships in 2025. However, they quickly regained them in a four-way tag team ladder match at Slammiversary.
