The World Tag Team Championship was a special prize in professional wrestling. It was a championship for tag teams, which are teams of two wrestlers. This title was the very first world tag team championship created by World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE).

For a while, it was only for the Raw brand, which is like a specific show or division in WWE. Later, it joined with another title, the WWE Tag Team Championship, to become the Unified WWE Tag Team Championship.

History of the Title

The World Tag Team Championship started in 1971. Back then, WWE was called the World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF). The very first champions were Luke Graham and Tarzan Tyler. They won the title on June 3, 1971.

In 1979, the company changed its name to the World Wrestling Federation (WWF). Because of this, the championship also got a new name: the World Wrestling Federation Tag Team Championship.

Unifying the Titles

In 2001, something big happened at an event called Survivor Series. There was a major storyline called the Invasion. During this time, wrestlers from different groups were fighting each other.

The Hardy Boyz (Matt and Jeff Hardy) were the current World Tag Team Champions for the WWF. They faced The Dudley Boys (Bubba Ray and D-Von Dudley). The Dudley Boys held the WCW World Tag Team Championship. This match was special because it was a title unification match inside a Steel Cage. This meant the winner would hold both titles.

The Dudley Boys won the match. They became the last WCW Tag Team Champions and also the WWF Tag Team Champions. This brought the two titles together.

Changes in WWE

In 2002, the WWF changed its name again to World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). So, the championship was then called the World Wrestling Entertainment Tag Team Championship.

For a while, the championship could be defended on either WWE Monday Night Raw or WWE Thursday Night Smackdown. But then, it became only for the Raw Brand. The person in charge of Raw at that time, Stephanie McMahon, decided to create new WWE Tag Team Titles. These new titles were made just for the Smackdown Brand.
