History of Cameron

Cameron started as a small community around a special kind of road called a plank road. This road was later followed by a railroad, which helped the town grow.

The town was first planned in 1875. It officially became an incorporated town in 1876. Cameron was important because it was at the end of the Raleigh and Augusta Railroad line.

This location made Cameron a great spot for new businesses to start. People built places to make turpentine, which comes from pine trees. They also opened stores and hotels to serve travelers and railroad customers. Farmers in Cameron also grew and sold a lot of dewberry fruit.
