Vass is a small town in Moore County, North Carolina, United States. In 2020, about 952 people lived there. Vass started growing in the late 1800s because of the railroad. It was first called Bynum, then Winder, before becoming Vass in 1892. The town officially became a town (was incorporated) in 1907.

History of Vass

Vass began as a stop on the Seaboard Railway. It was first known as Bynum Station. This stop was mainly used to load wood, turpentine, and resin from the local area onto trains. Turpentine and resin are sticky liquids from pine trees, used to make things like paint and soap.

In 1877, the town's name changed to Winder. This was to honor Major John C. Winder, who was a general manager for the Seaboard Railroad. Then, in 1892, the name changed again to Vass. This time, it honored Major William Worrell Vass, who was the paymaster for the railroad.

Vass was just a train stop until 1907. That year, it officially became a town, with Mr. Alex Gunter as its first mayor. In the 1910s, the town really started to grow. People like Mr. Angus Cameron helped make Vass a busy and successful community.

Angus Cameron's Contributions

Cameron was on the local school board for about 50 years. He even built the first school building in town. He also built the first brick buildings in Vass. He started the Vass Cotton Mill Company and built the mill building. His efforts helped the town become a strong and active place.
