The Hungry Tiger of Oz is an exciting adventure story from 1926. It is the twentieth book in the famous Oz series, which was first created by L. Frank Baum. This particular book was written by Ruth Plumly Thompson and illustrated by John R. Neill.

What's the Story About?

The story begins in a small kingdom called Rash, located in the southwest of Ev. A mean ruler named Irasha the Rough, who is the Pasha of Rash, has a big problem. His prison is so full that he can't fit any more people inside!

The Hungry Tiger's Journey

To solve his problem, the Pasha's advisor suggests bringing a fierce animal from nearby Oz. This animal would then eat the prisoners. The advisor uses a magical "hurry cane" to travel to the Emerald City. There, he tricks the Hungry Tiger into coming to Rash. But the Hungry Tiger, who first appeared in Ozma of Oz, is known for being very kind-hearted. He is too gentle to eat anyone, especially prisoners!

New Friends in Trouble

Meanwhile, two other characters, Betsy Bobbin and her new friend, Carter Green the Vegetable Man, have their own adventure. They get lost on a winding road and end up in Rash because of some magical Quick Sandals. As soon as they arrive, they are thrown into the crowded prison. Inside, they meet the Scarlet Prince Evered, also known as Reddy. He is the true ruler of Rash.

Escaping and Searching for Magic

The Hungry Tiger, Betsy, Carter, and Reddy all escape from the prison together. They then go on many adventures, meeting strange characters like Big Wigs and Gnomes. Their main goal is to find three special magic rubies.

Ozma's Own Challenge

Back in the Land of Oz, Princess Ozma faces her own difficulties. She is confronted by a balloon-like creature named Atmos Fere. He lives high up in the sky, in the upper stratosphere. Atmos Fere wants to kidnap Ozma and take her to his kingdom. He wants to prove to his friends that living beings can exist on the Earth's surface. Luckily, Ozma has a secret weapon: a small pin!

The Happy Ending

Eventually, the adventurers find the magic rubies. With the rubies, Prince Reddy is able to get his throne back and become the rightful ruler of Rash. The mean Pasha and his evil advisor end up stranded on a lonely island in the Nonestic Ocean.

How the Book Was Shared

The publisher, Reilly & Lee, did some creative things to promote The Hungry Tiger of Oz. They sent out special news releases that looked like they came from the Ozmapolitan. This was a pretend newspaper from the Emerald City. They also started a fan club for kids called the Ozmite Club. However, this club only lasted for two years.
