Nonestica, also known as the Continent of Imagination, is a make-believe land created by author L. Frank Baum. It is the main setting for his famous Oz stories. This magical continent is home to the Land of Oz and many other unique countries.

Exploring the Lands of Nonestica

Nonestica is filled with many different places, each with its own special features and inhabitants. Here are some of the most interesting lands you can find on this continent:

Boboland: Land of Sugar Pyramids

Boboland is a large country located southwest of the Land of Oz. It is famous for its giant Sugar Pyramids. Beneath Boboland, you can find several hidden lands:

  • Land of the Mangaboos - This is an underground fairy land. It is home to the Mangaboos, who are a race of people made entirely of vegetables!
  • Land of Naught - Also known as the County of the Gargoyles, this underground country is made completely of wood. Everything here, from plants to birds and animals, is wooden. It is home to wooden gargoyles.
  • Pyramid Mountain - This underground mountain connects the Valley of Voe to the Land of Naught. It has different levels, with some looking out onto a valley and others into a cloud bank.
  • Valley of Voe - This is a cup-shaped valley known for its Dama-Fruit. If you eat this fruit, you become invisible! The valley is also home to invisible people and large red Bears the size of horses.

Country of the Growleywogs

This small country borders Boboland. It is where the Growleywogs live. These creatures are very muscular giants.

Country of the Phanfasms

South of the Land of Ev, this country is home to the Phanfasms. These are hairy men with heads like different animals, such as mammals, birds, or reptiles. They live on Mt. Phantastico. A scarlet alligator guards the bridge to their village.

Country of the Whimsies

Also south of the Land of Ev, this country is home to the Whimsies. They are large, hulking people with tiny, doorknob-sized heads. They often wear huge, brightly colored masks.

Forest of Burzee: Santa's Home

The Forest of Burzee is a very old and grand forest. It is the main setting for the story The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus.

  • Laughing Valley - This valley is east of the Forest of Burzee. For many years, it was empty. Then, Santa Claus built his house there, and he still lives there today!

Hiland and Loland

These are two twin kingdoms. Hiland is home to the Hilanders, who are tall and thin people, about 7 feet (2.1 meters) tall. Loland is where the Lolanders live, and they are short and stout. Both kingdoms are ruled by a character named John Dough.

Kingdom of Dreams

This country borders Boboland and the Deadly Desert. Not much is known about the Kingdom of Dreams, as it was not explored in the Oz books.

Land of Ev

The Land of Ev is another magical land located across the Deadly Desert from the Land of Oz.

Land of Ix

The Land of Ix is ruled by Queen Zixi, a witch who has lived for centuries. It is separated from the Land of Oz by the Impassible Wastes.

Land of Mo

The Land of Mo is a magical country near the Land of Oz. Its people never die, and all the animals there can speak human languages.

Land of Oz: The Emerald City's Home

The Land of Oz is the most famous place in Nonestica. It is the main setting of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. A dangerous area called the Deadly Desert surrounds it on all sides.

Merryland

Merryland is an enchanted country ruled by the Queen of Merryland. It has seven valleys connected by archways, with a river flowing through them.

Noland

Noland is a kingdom located near the Land of Oz and the Land of Ix. It is also across the Impassible Wastes from Oz.

Nome Kingdom: Underground Realm

The Nome Kingdom is the home of the Nomes and their ruler, the Nome King. This kingdom is found deep underground, beneath the mountains north of the Land of Ev.

Rinkitink

Rinkitink is a country near the Nome Kingdom and the Nonestic Ocean. It is ruled by a king also named Rinkitink.

Ripple Land

This is a countryside where the hills and mountains are always rippling. Travelers heading to the Growleywogs' territory must pass through this wavy land.

Rose Kingdom

This small kingdom borders the Land of Ev. It is known for growing the rarest and most beautiful roses in a large greenhouse. Breaking the greenhouse glass is against the law.

The Nonestic Ocean and Its Islands

The Nonestic Ocean surrounds the continent of Nonestica. It is dotted with many unique islands, each with its own stories and inhabitants.

Islands of the Nonestic Ocean

  • Coregos - An important island ruled by a queen. Its people are fierce warriors who invade other islands to capture slaves for their farms.
  • Elbow Island - A small, rocky island where nothing grows but rocks. It has been a hiding place for pirates and their treasures.
  • Isa Poso - A very cold, ice-bound island. Its inhabitants are Snow Giants whose faces are carved from ice. King Chin Chilly rules this frozen land.
  • Isle of the Mifkets - This island is home to the Mifkets. These creatures have coconut-shaped heads, pear-shaped bodies, and long arms. Their houses are made from leaves found on the island.
  • Nonagon Isle - A small, nine-sided island. It is rocky and not very welcoming. Nine fishermen live here, catching fish and growing small gardens. They are as tough as their island and live in nine-sided houses, even sailing nine-sided boats!

  • Pingaree - This island is famous for producing the largest and finest pearls in the world.
  • Pirate Island - Near the Isle of the Mifkets, this island is home to retired pirates. It also has a strange creature named Sport, who is made from different sports equipment! Anyone landing here must pay a large ransom or face a harsh punishment.
  • Regos - An important island with fertile shorelines and mountains containing gold and silver. Slaves mine these metals, watched by fierce overseers. Regos is ruled by a king who invades other islands for slaves. It was once home to a creature called the Choggenmugger, which ate all the dragons, crocodiles, and serpents on the island.
  • Roaraway - A small, rocky, and heavily protected island. Its people have been at war with Norroway for centuries.
