How The Island Got Its Name
The name "The Island" comes from how the area used to be. It was once like a real island! On its south and west sides, it was bordered by the Delaware River. On its north and east sides, it had the Trenton Water Power Canal. This canal was a man-made waterway.
During the 1950s, the canal was filled in. This was done to create space for a new road. That road is now Route 29. So, even though it's not surrounded by water anymore, the name "The Island" stuck!
