The Leela is a fancy Indian hotel chain. It was started in 1986 by C. P. Krishnan Nair. Today, a company called Brookfield Asset Management owns it.

The Leela's Story
The Leela hotels are part of a bigger group called The Leela Group. The founder, C. P. Krishnan Nair, named the company after his wife.
In 1986, Mr. Nair bought a large piece of land. It was 11 acres near his home in Sahar Village, Mumbai. Here, he built his very first hotel, The Leela Mumbai. It was the first fancy hotel close to the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport.
Growing Across India
In 1991, The Leela opened its second hotel in Goa. The Leela Goa was designed to look like the buildings in the state. This luxury resort by the sea was inspired by Portuguese style. It covers 75 acres of land in South Goa, near Cavelossim Beach.
In 2001, the group built a new, modern hotel in Bangalore. This hotel has 357 rooms. It was inspired by the Mysore Palace and old Indian architecture. It is surrounded by seven acres of beautiful gardens.
By 2009, two more hotels joined the group. These were The Leela Palace in Udaipur and The Leela Ambience Gurgaon.
The Leela Ambience Gurgaon was the first hotel they managed for someone else. The Leela Palace New Delhi opened in April 2011. This palace hotel was inspired by the famous architect Sir Edwin Lutyens' designs for Delhi.
In 2013, the group opened a new hotel in Chennai. It is called The Leela Palace Chennai. In 2015, they took over another managed hotel in East Delhi. This was The Leela Ambience Convention Hotel.
In 2021, The Leela added three more hotels. These were The Leela Palace Jaipur, The Leela Gandhinagar, and The Leela Bhartiya City Bengaluru. The company also plans to open new hotels in Hyderabad and Agra.
Working with Other Companies
The Leela works with other hotel groups around the world. They have agreements with US-based Preferred Hotels and Resorts. They are also a member of the Global Hotel Alliance from Dubai.
In 2019, The Leela sold its hotels and operations to Brookfield Asset Management. This deal included hotels in New Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, and Udaipur. This was a big step for Brookfield into India's hotel market.
Awards and Recognition
The Leela Palaces, Hotels and Resorts has won many awards. These awards show how good their hotels are.

- In July 2019, The Leela was ranked among the Top 10 best hotel brands in the world.
- In July 2016, it was named the fifth best hotel brand in the world.
- Experiential Venue Awards 2017:
- In July 2017, The Leela Palaces, Hotels & Resorts won 'India's Favorite Hospitality Group For MICE & Weddings'. This award is for hotels that are great for meetings, events, and weddings.
