A Look Back at The Leela's Journey
How The Leela Hotels Began
The Leela Palaces, Hotels and Resorts started as part of a bigger group called The Leela Group. The founder, C. P. Krishnan Nair, named the company after his wife. In 1986, Mr. Nair bought some land in Sahar Village, Mumbai. He built his very first hotel there, called The Leela Mumbai. It was one of the first luxury hotels near the big Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport.
Growing Across India
The main office for The Leela is in Mumbai, India. A company called Brookfield Asset Management now owns these hotels. The Leela runs twelve amazing hotels in many big cities and fun vacation spots across India. These places include New Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Udaipur, Jaipur, and Mumbai.
In 2001, The Leela built a modern hotel in Bangalore. It had 357 rooms. This hotel was inspired by old Indian palaces and surrounded by beautiful gardens. By 2009, two more hotels joined the group. These were The Leela Palace in Udaipur and The Leela Ambience Gurgaon.
The Leela Ambience Gurgaon Hotel & Residences was the group's first hotel that they managed but did not own. The Leela Palace New Delhi opened in April 2011. This palace hotel was inspired by the design of Sir Edwin Lutyens for Delhi. The group opened a new hotel in Chennai in 2013. In 2015, they took over another managed hotel in East Delhi.
In 2021, The Leela added three more hotels to its collection. These were The Leela Palace Jaipur, The Leela Gandhinagar, and The Leela Bhartiya City Bengaluru.
Working with Other Hotel Groups
The Leela brand works with other hotel groups for marketing. They have partnerships with US-based Preferred Hotels and Resorts. They are also a member of the Global Hotel Alliance, which is based in Dubai.
In October 2019, The Leela company sold its hotel properties and operations. This included hotels in New Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, and Udaipur. Brookfield Asset Management from Canada bought them. This deal marked Brookfield's entry into India's hotel market.

- In July 2016, Travel + Leisure USA World’s Best Awards ranked The Leela as the fifth best hotel brand in the world.
- In July 2017, The Leela won the 'India's Favorite Hospitality Group For MICE & Weddings' at the Experiential Venue Awards. MICE stands for Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions.
- In July 2019, Travel + Leisure USA World’s Best Awards again ranked The Leela in the Top 10 best hotel brands globally.
- In 2024, Travel + Leisure USA World’s Best Awards named The Leela as the #3 World’s Best Hotel Brand.
