The Lightbox is a cool public gallery and museum in Woking, England. It has three galleries that show different art and history exhibits all the time. There's also a free museum called 'Woking's Story' where you can learn about the local area. The Lightbox first opened its doors on September 14, 2007.

What is The Lightbox?

The Lightbox is right in the middle of Woking, next to the Basingstoke Canal. It was built to bring art and history to people in the area and beyond. The idea for The Lightbox started way back in 1993 when some local volunteers wanted to create a cultural spot in Woking.

How The Lightbox Was Built

After a lot of fundraising, a modern building was designed by Marks Barfield Architects. These are the same architects who designed the famous London Eye! The Lightbox is a charity, which means it's a non-profit organization. It gets some money from the Woking Borough Council and has also received help from the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Arts Council.

Awards and Recognition

The Lightbox has won some important awards. In 2008, it won the Art Fund Prize Museum of the Year award. This is a big deal for museums in the UK! In 2016, it also got a Green Tourism silver award, showing it cares about the environment.

What Can You See at The Lightbox?

The Lightbox puts on about 20 different temporary art shows every year. Most of these shows are created by their own team. This means there's always something new and exciting to see when you visit!
