The Mail on Sunday is a popular British newspaper that comes out every Sunday. Lots of people read it, with over six million readers each week! It was first started in 1982 by Lord Northcliffe. It's one of the biggest Sunday newspapers sold in Britain. Its "sister paper" is The Daily Mail, which started much earlier in 1896. Both newspapers are owned by a company called Associated Newspapers, but they have different teams of writers and editors.

The Story of The Mail on Sunday

The Mail on Sunday first started on 2 May 1982. It was meant to be a Sunday partner for the Daily Mail. The very first main story on its front page was about the RAF's bombing of Port Stanley airport in the Falklands.

Early Challenges

The company that owned the paper, Daily Mail and General Trust (DMGT), had big goals. They hoped to sell 1.25 million copies every week. However, when The Mail on Sunday first launched, it wasn't a big success. After just six weeks, they were only selling about 700,000 copies.

Turning Things Around

Because sales were low, Lord Rothermere brought in David English (who later became Sir David). He was the editor of the Daily Mail. Sir David helped to redesign and relaunch The Mail on Sunday. In just over three months, he stopped the sales from falling further. The number of copies sold then grew to 840,000.

Sir David also added three new parts to the newspaper:

  • The first was a special series, like a cookery book that came out in parts.
  • The second was a colorful comic section, which was new for British Sunday newspapers.
  • The third was a magazine called You magazine.

By 2008, the newspaper's circulation (the number of copies sold) had grown to about 2.3 million. That's a huge increase of more than 1.5 million copies!

Editors Through the Years

The newspaper's good reputation grew a lot thanks to Stewart Steven. During his time as editor, sales went from about 1 million to almost 2 million. After him, Jonathan Holborow became the editor. The current editor is Peter Wright.
