How the Show Started
The idea for The Mr. Science Show came from another TV program called Cable Goes To School. This program, made by Time Warner Cable, showed a special segment about live science education shows. These live shows took place at a small theater in Melbourne, Florida.
From Live Shows to TV
At first, these live science shows were created to help promote The Science Fare stores, which sold science supplies. After one show about magnets and magnetism aired, people wanted more. So, the first full episodes of The Mr. Science Show were made.
Meet Mr. Science
Tim Perkins became the star of the show, known as Mr. Science. The kids in the audience actually gave him that name! Each episode focused on one science topic, exploring it in detail.
What Made the Show Special?
The Mr. Science Show first appeared on Time Warner Cable in 1992. Tim Perkins played a science enthusiast who loved to share his knowledge. Each 60-minute episode was packed with learning and laughter.
Experiments and Stories
Mr. Science would do several experiments and tell stories that taught viewers about a specific area of science. Many experiments involved children from the audience. They were often simple enough for viewers to try safely at home.
Humor and Learning from Mistakes
The way Mr. Science presented everything was very funny. Something would often "go wrong" during an experiment. This showed viewers what not to do, making the learning even more memorable and entertaining.
Sharing Science with Everyone
The episodes of The Mr. Science Show were recorded live. They were then given for free to other Time Warner Cable locations. This meant that audiences across the United States could watch them from time to time.
Reaching Many Students
More than 50 show ideas were written, but only a few were actually filmed and broadcast. Sometimes, hundreds of children from Brevard County Public Schools would come to watch the live tapings. Some schools in Florida even used parts of The Mr. Science Show to create their own Public Service Announcements in their TV studios.
