The Mystery of the Brass Bound Trunk is the 17th book in the exciting Nancy Drew Mystery Stories series. It was written by an author known as Carolyn Keene. This book first came out in 1940. Later, in 1976, it was updated with a new story.
The Original 1940 Story
In the first version of the book, Nancy Drew plans a fun boat trip to South America. Her friends George and Bess join her. They are part of a special tour for a girls' school. But something strange happens! One student's mother, Mrs. Joslin, does not want Nancy on the trip.
Before they leave, Nancy learns about problems with the Trenton Trunk Company. Their products are not very good. The company owner, a friend of Nancy's dad, asks Nancy for help. He wants her to help his daughter, Doris, with her relationships. He hopes Doris will marry the son of an old business partner.
Nancy has many mysteries to solve on this trip. She needs to find out who a mysterious red-haired young man is. She also wonders why Doris is so quiet. What is really going on with the trunk company? Why did Mrs. Joslin try to stop Nancy from coming? And what is the deal with Nancy's and Nestrelda's identical trunks?
The Revised 1976 Story
The story was changed in 1976. In this version, Nancy, Bess, and George are on a trip to New York City. They are traveling from the Netherlands. They meet a new friend named Nelda.
Soon, someone starts threatening both Nancy and Nelda. This is because they share the same initials: N.D. They also find a mysterious trunk with the initials N.D. on it. Nancy must figure out who is behind these threats. She also needs to discover where the strange trunk came from.
On top of that, Nancy has to solve two more big mysteries. She must find out about smuggled jewelry. And she needs to recover important papers stolen from an African government. It's a busy trip for Nancy Drew!
Book Artwork Over the Years
The cover art for The Mystery of the Brass Bound Trunk has changed over time. The first cover from 1940 shows Nancy and George. They are trying to stop Nancy's trunk from being taken off a ship.
In 1962, the artwork was updated by Rudy Nappi. This new cover shows Nancy, Bess, and George in the same scene. They are wearing stylish suits from that time.
When the story was revised in 1976, Rudy Nappi created another new cover. This one shows Nancy against a brown background. It also has a mix of images, including a hidden pile of jewels.
