The Net, once known as The Marion, is a tall building planned for Downtown Seattle, Washington, USA. It will be 36 stories high. This building will have a mix of offices and shops, covering about 850,000 square feet. A company called Urban Visions is developing it. They had bigger plans for this spot before. They first wanted to build the tallest building in Seattle!

How the Building Plans Changed

Early Ideas for a Super-Tall Tower

In 2013, Urban Visions first shared their plans. They wanted to build a huge 77-story building. This tower was called the 888 Tower. It would have been 1,200 feet tall. If built, it would have been taller than the Columbia Center. The Columbia Center is currently the tallest building in Seattle.

In 2014, a contest was held to pick the best design for this super-tall building. Two main designs were considered. One was a 77-story plan from a company called Gensler. The other was a 60-story plan from NBBJ. Urban Visions chose the 60-story design by NBBJ.

The 60-Story Design

The NBBJ design for the 60-story tower was very interesting. It had a large open space in the middle, like a giant skylight. This space was called an atrium and was about 65 feet wide. Even though the building was shorter, its design allowed more people to fit on each floor.

This building was planned to be a mixed-use building. This means it would have different types of spaces. There would be shops on the ground floor. Offices and homes (condominiums) would be on the higher floors. The tower was designed to take up an entire city block. This block is between 2nd and 3rd Avenues and Columbia and Marion streets. If this 60-story tower had been built, it would have been the second-tallest building in Seattle. It would also have been the fifth-tallest on the West Coast of the United States.

The Current Plan for The Net

In October 2017, Urban Visions decided to make the building a bit smaller. They announced plans for a 28-story tower. This new building would be on the eastern half of the block. It would have about 600,000 square feet of office space. The project was given a new name: The Net.

NBBJ also created a new design for The Net. This design features a cool steel exoskeleton. An exoskeleton is like a strong outer frame that wraps around the building.

In early 2018, the design was changed again. The building's height was increased to 36 stories. A market space was added at street level. This market would have about 15,000 square feet of public space. Inside, a large glass staircase would connect all the floors. The top three floors of the building would have an outdoor terrace. This terrace would slope downwards from the 36th floor, offering great views.
