The Adelphi Club's Story
The building where the club is now used to be a house. It was built in 1888. During World War II, a bomb hit nearby but missed the house. This spot is now a small car park next to the club. Later, the house became a club for local workers. In late 1984, it changed into The New Adelphi Club.
Paul Jackson, the owner, started the club from humble beginnings. It has hosted many different bands from all over the world. The club is small and cozy. It has a unique, slightly worn-out look that people love. The inside walls have changed colors over time, from green to brown and back again.
The club has a front room with a pool table. There's also a bar area. This bar is even listed in a guide for good beer. The bar stays open every evening from 8 pm, even if there isn't a live show.
Famous Bands at the Adelphi
The main concert room has seen thousands of musicians. Many bands played there when they were just starting out. These include Pulp, Green Day, and Radiohead. Local band The Housemartins first played there in 1988. Other famous groups like The Stone Roses, Supergrass, and Mumford & Sons also performed.
Oasis played at the Adelphi the day before their first song came out. Radiohead played there twice. Their second show was in 1992, around the time their hit song "Creep" was popular. One time, the band The Shamen even slept on the club's kitchen floor after their show!
Special Anniversaries
In 2009, the club celebrated its 25th birthday. There were special concerts and an art show. In October 2014, Kaiser Chiefs played a big show for the club's 30th anniversary. A film was made about their performance. This film was shown at the Adelphi and later at a film festival in the United States.
After the Kaiser Chiefs, other famous musicians played there. These included Paul Heaton and Richard Hawley. In December 2015, The Bohicas also performed. In January 2016, a radio show from BBC Radio 6 Music was broadcast from the club. This was part of a tour celebrating independent music venues. Mark Morriss was the main act that night.
