What Happens in The Night Tourist?
The story begins with Jack Perdu, a high school student, living with his dad at Yale University. One cold winter night, Jack is hit by a car. It's a very serious accident. After this, his father sends him to New York City to see a mysterious doctor named Dr. Lyons. This doctor is said to know a lot about death.
Jack's Strange Tour
Jack has a very quick meeting with Dr. Lyons. Afterward, he heads back to Grand Central Terminal to catch his train home. But Jack decides he wants to see some sights in New York City first. He joins a tour group near some pillars in the station. As the group moves on, Jack stays behind.
Meeting Euri
While exploring, Jack meets a girl named Euri. She offers to show him around Grand Central Station. Euri promises to take him to secret places that only "True Urban Explorers" would know about. This sounds like a fun adventure!
Discovering the Underworld
Euri leads Jack to a hidden door on the sixth train track. This door opens to a long set of stairs. They go down nine floors! There, Jack discovers the New York Underworld. This is a special place where spirits of the dead gather. They come here to sort out their problems before they can move on to a peaceful afterlife called Elysium.
Chased by Cerberus
Suddenly, two security guards and their huge, three-headed dog, Cerberus, start chasing Jack and Euri. Euri quickly pulls Jack into a hidden corner. She then tells him a big secret: she is actually a ghost! Euri desperately wants to live again in the human world. Jack promises to help her escape. In return, Euri promises to help Jack find his own mother, who he misses very much.
The Ending of Jack's Journey
In the end, Jack finally meets his mother and helps her find peace. He tries his best to bring Euri back to the human world, but he isn't able to. Jack and his father then move back to New York City. Jack starts a new school there and makes a new friend in his Latin class. For a while, Jack loses his special ability to see ghosts. But soon, he gets it back! He sees Euri sitting on a windowsill, watching him. Jack tries to apologize for not being able to bring her back, but Euri puts her finger to her lips. This shows she already understands how he feels.
Becoming a Movie
In 2010, a company called Illumination Entertainment bought the rights to make an animated movie based on The Night Tourist.
