A Look Back in Time
Early Days and the Militia
The Old Barracks in Grantham was built in 1858. It was designed for the South Lincoln Militia. A militia was a group of ordinary citizens who trained to defend their local area. The architect, Henry Goddard, likely designed the building.
Over time, the South Lincoln Militia changed. In 1881, it became the 4th (Special Reserve) Battalion of the Lincolnshire Regiment. This was a more formal part of the British Army.
New Occupants
In 1908, the 4th (Special Reserve) Battalion was no longer needed. After they left, the barracks became home to B Company. This was part of the 4th Battalion, the Lincolnshire Regiment (Territorial Force). The Territorial Force was a volunteer army group. People joined it to train for defense in their spare time.
World War I and Beyond
In 1901, another group moved into the barracks. This was A Squadron of the Lincolnshire Yeomanry. The Yeomanry were volunteer cavalry soldiers. They rode horses and were often used for scouting.
When World War I started in August 1914, the squadron got ready at the Old Barracks. They were later sent to Salonika in 1915. During the war, the building also helped out as a military hospital. It cared for injured soldiers.
After the war, the Yeomanry squadron used the barracks again. However, the squadron was disbanded in 1920. This meant the group was officially closed down.
Changing Uses
In 1950, the 4th Battalion of the Royal Lincolnshire Regiment joined with the 6th Battalion. They formed a new group called the 4th/6th Battalion. After this, the Old Barracks was no longer used by the military. It was "decommissioned," meaning it was taken out of military service.
The building then found new purposes. In the 1960s and 1970s, local music bands used it for practice. In the 1980s, Grantham College used the space. Finally, in the late 1980s, the Old Barracks was changed into offices.
