History of The Plains
The name "The Plains" first described the area where ancient people called the Mound Builders lived. These groups built large mounds of earth. A post office named The Plains has been open in the area since 1908.

Protecting Open Spaces
Recently, a nature preserve was created in The Plains by the Athens Conservancy. This preserve helps protect natural areas. There are plans to extend the Hockhocking Adena Bikeway through this preserve. This will give the community easy access to a path for biking and walking.

Ancient Mounds and Circles
