The Power of Dark is an exciting fantasy novel for young readers. It was written by the famous children's author Robin Jarvis. This book is the first in a new series called "The Witching Legacy."
The story takes place in the spooky coastal town of Whitby. This town is special because it was also the setting for Jarvis's earlier books, "The Whitby Witches." The "Witching Legacy" series is planned to have four books in total. The Power of Dark was first released in June 2016. The second book, The Devil's Paintbox, came out in March 2017. A third book, Time of Blood, was published later in 2017.
What's the Story?
Whitby is a town on the coast of Yorkshire, England. It is famous for its old, mysterious buildings. Many people think of Dracula when they hear about Whitby!
Cherry Cerise is the very last of the Whitby Witches. It is her job to protect the town. She must defend it from strange and evil attacks.
Lil and Verne are best friends who grew up in Whitby. Lil's parents own a shop called Whitby Gothic. It sells things related to witchcraft. But Lil and Verne do not believe in witches or magic. They think it is all just stories.
An Ancient Evil Awakens
One day, a terrible storm hits Whitby. Cherry is sure that old, evil forces are causing it. She knows a legend about something called the Nimius. This powerful item was created by a magician named Melchior Pyke. He had help from a young witch known as Scaur Annie.
But Melchior Pyke and Scaur Annie were tricked. A bad servant named Mister Dark betrayed them both. This betrayal started a huge fight. This fight has continued even after they all died!
Now, Mister Dark is back. He has a very evil plan to destroy Whitby completely. Cherry cannot stop him by herself. She needs help from Lil and Verne. But how can she get them to help if they do not even believe in magic?
Why Whitby?
Robin Jarvis has always loved the town of Whitby. He finds it very inspiring because of its history and spooky atmosphere. He decided to write another series set there.
Jarvis said he felt a strong pull to return to Whitby. He wanted to walk its narrow, old streets. He also wanted to climb the 199 steps to the windy graveyard. From there, he could look out over the town. He believes Whitby is a place that holds onto you. He feels that strange, magical stories are just waiting to be found there.
Whitby's Goth Culture
The author also wanted to see how Whitby had changed over the years. He was especially interested in the growth of "Goth culture" in the town. Whitby has become a very popular place for Goths to visit. Many Goths even make a special trip there.
The book shows how this Goth culture affects the town. It talks about Lil's parents' shop, Whitby Gothic. The story also mentions Whitby's popular Goth Weekend. This is a big event where Goths from all over come together.
