A Look at the Republic Building's History

How the Building Was Built

The Republic building was finished in 1971. It was designed by Myron Goldsmith from the company Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. This building was the first part of a big plan for Columbus that started in the 1960s.

The building has only one floor. It was made with a strong frame of steel and aluminum. It sits on a low concrete base. The outside walls were made of glass. This allowed people walking by to see the newspaper's bright yellow printing press inside!

Changes Over the Years

The printing press was moved out of the building in 1997. After that, all the newspaper printing happened somewhere else. In 2016, the newspaper itself moved to a new location.

Later in 2016, a company called Southeastern Indiana Medical Holdings bought the building. They paid $2.8 million for it. They planned to use it as an office for their administration.

Then, in 2018, the IU Foundation Inc. of Indiana University bought the building. They also paid $2.8 million. The university plans to use this special building for its new Master of Architecture program. This means future architects will learn in a famous architectural building!
