The Royal Canadian Pancake Houses were a chain of restaurants. They served delicious pancakes and other breakfast foods. These restaurants were known for their "gourmet" (fancy and high-quality) pancakes. They also kept their prices fair. You could find these restaurants in New York City and in the South Beach area of Miami Beach, Florida.
How the Pancake Houses Started
The Royal Canadian Pancake Houses were part of a company called Royal Canadian Foods Corp. The very first restaurant opened in a part of New York City called Tribeca. This happened in 1989. Soon after, a second location opened in Midtown Manhattan.
In November 1993, the people who started the company, Sheldon Golumbia and Beatrice Puja, decided to make it a public company. This means they sold parts of the company, called shares, to people. They sold 250,000 shares, each for $5.00.
After that, two more Royal Canadian Pancake Houses opened in New York City. These were in the Upper West Side and Gramercy areas. The company also opened a Royal Canadian Pancake House in Miami Beach, Florida. In Miami, they even had a special restaurant called Womlette House. This place served "womlettes," which were like an omelet but with a waffle as the base!
Sadly, in the fall of 1998, Royal Canadian Foods closed all of their restaurants.
