The Salisbury Review is a British magazine that comes out four times a year. It focuses on ideas related to conservative thought. The magazine started in 1982. It was created by a group called the Salisbury Group. They wanted to share and develop traditional conservative ideas.

The magazine is named after Robert Gascoyne-Cecil, 3rd Marquess of Salisbury. He was a British prime minister in the late 1800s. Roger Scruton, a well-known philosopher, was the main editor for 18 years. He published the magazine through his company, Claridge Press. From 2000, the historian A. D. Harvey became the editor. From 2006 to 2012, Merrie Cave was the managing editor. Since 2012, Myles Harris has been the editor. He is a doctor and a journalist.

Many important people have written for The Salisbury Review. Some of them include Margaret Thatcher, who was a prime minister, and Václav Havel, a former president. Other contributors were Antony Flew, Christie Davies, Enoch Powell, Hugh Trevor-Roper, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, Norman Stone, Theodore Dalrymple, Roger Watson, and Peter Mullen.

Magazine's Story

The magazine began in 1982. The Salisbury Group chose Roger Scruton to be the editor. They picked him because he supported traditional conservative ideas. He wrote about these ideas in his book The Meaning of Conservatism (1980). This was different from the ideas of Margaret Thatcher's supporters, who focused more on the free market. The Salisbury Group itself started in 1978. Its goal was to support the idea that good government should do as little as possible. This was a view held by the Third Marquess of Salisbury.

In 2002, Roger Scruton wrote an article called "My Life Beyond the Pale." In it, he talked about how hard it was to find writers for a conservative magazine. He also mentioned that it was tough to get people to subscribe at first. He said that editing the magazine took a lot of his time. He also faced many challenges because of his work on the magazine. Despite these difficulties, he felt it was all worth it.

The Honeyford Discussion

In 1984, an article in The Salisbury Review caused a lot of public discussion. This article was written by Ray Honeyford. He was a headmaster at a school in Bradford, England. This event brought a lot of attention to The Salisbury Review. According to Roger Scruton, this discussion helped the magazine gain many new subscribers.

Honeyford's article talked about different cultures and how people from various backgrounds fit into society. It also discussed how these things might affect learning in schools. He had shared similar ideas before in other publications. In his 1984 article, he talked about how schools should teach about different cultures. He also discussed how textbooks were reviewed.

After this article was published, there was a big public debate across the country. Honeyford had already talked with his local education group about his views. But after the 1984 article, there was a lot of discussion about his job. He eventually left his position about two years after the article came out.
