The Savage Innocents is an exciting adventure film from 1960. It was directed and co-written by Nicholas Ray. The movie stars Anthony Quinn and Yoko Tani. Other actors like Lee Montague, Marco Guglielmi, Carlo Giustini, Anthony Chinn, and Michael Chow also appear. You might even spot Peter O'Toole in one of his first film roles!
The story for the film comes from a book called Top of the World. It was written by a Swiss author named Hans Rüesch. This movie was a big international project. It involved film companies from Britain, Italy, and France. In the United States, Paramount Pictures released it.
Filming took place in real locations in the Canadian Arctic. Some indoor scenes were shot in Britain at Pinewood Studios. Other parts were filmed in Rome at Cinecittà studios. The film was even shown at the 1960 Cannes Film Festival. It explores how the Inuit people survive in the very cold Arctic. It also shows their struggle to keep their traditional way of life. This is especially true as modern civilization starts to reach them.
Story of the Film
The movie follows an Inuit hunter. He lives in the harsh Arctic wilderness. One day, a Christian missionary visits his home. The hunter offers the missionary food and traditional hospitality. However, the missionary refuses these offers. This leads to a misunderstanding. The hunter, following his customs, accidentally kills the missionary.
Two white policemen then begin to chase the hunter. During the chase, the hunter saves the life of one of the policemen. This creates a difficult situation. The surviving policeman must choose. Will he follow the law and arrest the hunter? Or will he show gratitude for his life being saved? The film explores this tough decision.
