Meet Eva Nine: A Girl's Journey
Eva Nine is a 12-year-old girl who has never seen the sun. She has never been outside or met another person. Her whole life has been spent in an underground home. But everything changes one day. A dangerous hunter attacks her home. Eva is forced to run away to save her life.
She desperately wants to find someone else like her. A single old picture gives her hope. It shows a girl, a robot, an adult, and the word "WondLa." This clue sends Eva on an amazing adventure.
The Story of Eva's Adventure
Eva Nine has lived all her 12 years in a hidden underground place called the Sanctuary. A robot named Muthr (Multi-Utility Task Help Robot zero-six) raised her. Eva only knows about the outside world from hologram videos. She also has a small piece of cardboard with the words "Wond" and "La" on it.
One day, a huge creature named Besteel attacks the Sanctuary. Eva has to leave Muthr behind and escape her home. When she sees the outside world for the first time, she is surprised. It looks nothing like the holograms she grew up with. She finds many strange and dangerous plants and animals. Her special Omnipod device cannot even identify them.
After another meeting with Besteel, Eva finds new friends. She meets an alien named Rovender Kitt and a giant creature named Otto. Otto is like a huge water bear. Eva then finds Muthr again in her ruined home. She convinces the Sanctuary computer to let Muthr go with her. They plan to find the next underground Sanctuary.
When they find the next Sanctuary, it is empty. So, they convince Rovender to guide them to a royal city called Solas.
The group faces Besteel and other aliens several more times. Eva almost gets preserved for display at a royal museum. While in the museum, she learns something amazing. The creatures on this planet, called "Orbona," arrived long ago. They came to a dead world and "woke it up" for their own use. She also finds many old human items. She learns about a ruined human city beyond a dangerous desert.
Eva, Muthr, Rovender, and Otto cross the desert. They find the remains of an ancient human city buried under the sand. Besteel soon arrives and attacks them. Muthr gets badly damaged. Eva then uses her Omnipod to call several deadly Sand Snipers. They kill Besteel and drag him under the sand.
Muthr cannot be fixed and soon stops working. The remaining friends dig into one of the buried buildings. They discover it was once the New York Public Library. This means Orbona was once Earth! The library computer still works. It identifies the "WondLa" cardboard as the cover of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. It was written by L. Frank Baum. This makes Eva realize that Earth died and was reborn as Orbona.
In the end, a human boy named Hailey arrives in an airship called the Bijou. He tells Eva he is there to take her home.
More Adventures: The WondLa Series
The book's description says, "The Search is just the beginning." The Search for WondLa is the first book in a series of three.
The second book is called A Hero for WondLa. It was released on May 8, 2012. In this book, Eva Nine finally finds what she always wanted: other humans! She and her friends are rescued by Hailey, another human. Eva is very happy. Hailey takes Eva and her friends to a human colony called New Attica. Humans of all kinds live there in peace.
But things are not perfect in New Attica. Eva Nine and her friends soon realize something bad is happening. If they don't stop it, it could mean the end of everyone on Orbona.
The final book in the series is The Battle for WondLa, which came out in 2014. In this last adventure, Eva Nine must save the people of Orbona from a character named Cadmus.
WondLa Comes to Life on Screen
In February 2021, exciting news was shared! Apple, working with Skydance Animation, announced plans to create a TV show. This show will be based on The Search for WondLa. It will be shown on Apple TV+. The show will be written and produced by Lauren Montgomery.
