The Sherrys: How They Started
The group formed in 1961. It was put together by Philadelphia singer Little Joe Cook. He used to be the lead singer of a group called The Thrillers. The Sherrys included two of his daughters, Delphine and Dinell Cook. His niece, Charlotte Butler, and their cousin, Dolores "Honey" Wiley-Sowell, were also members. For a short time, Tammi Terrell was part of the group. She later became a famous singer at Motown Records. At first, The Sherrys sang backup for other local artists like Bobby Rydell.
Their Big Hit: "Pop Pop Pop-Pie"
In 1962, a new dance craze called 'The Popeye' became very popular. The group decided to record a song to go with it. The song was called "Pop Pop Pop-Pie." It was written by Johnny Madara and Dave White. These two writers later formed a band called The Spokesmen. The Sherrys were invited to perform their new song on American Bandstand. This TV show helped many artists become famous. "Pop Pop Pop-Pie" did very well on the music charts. It reached number 25 on the US Billboard R&B chart. It also reached number 36 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
After the Charts
The group then recorded another song called "Slop Time." This song was also meant to go with a dance called The Slop. However, this record did not sell as well as their first hit. An album called At the Hop with the Sherrys came out in early 1963. Most of the songs on this album were written by Madara and White. The group became less active in the US. But they became popular in Europe, where they toured twice. Charlotte Butler later moved to Sweden. She married Svenne Hedlund there. They formed a music duo called Svenne & Lotta. This duo became very famous in Scandinavia during the 1970s and 1980s.
