What Happens in the Story?
The story begins with a special message, called a prophecy, that was given to Firestar by a wise cat from StarClan (the warrior ancestors). Later, three young cat siblings named Lionkit, Hollykit, and Jaykit hear about a fox and her babies in their ThunderClan home. They secretly leave their camp to try and help their Clan. They get into trouble, but a group of older warriors saves them.
A few months later, the kits become apprentices. Hollypaw starts training with Leafpool, the medicine cat. Lionpaw becomes Ashfur's apprentice, learning to be a warrior. Jaypaw begins training with Brightheart.
A Surprise Return
At a big meeting called a Gathering, all the Clans have little news to share. Suddenly, two unknown cats appear. The Clans realize it's Graystripe, who everyone thought had died. He was taken away by Twolegs (humans) in an earlier book. Graystripe returns with a new friend, Millie. He explains that he escaped with Millie's help and found his way back. The forest they used to live in was destroyed. Graystripe and Millie return to ThunderClan, very tired.
Graystripe's return causes a problem for Firestar. Firestar had made Brambleclaw the new deputy (second-in-command), thinking Graystripe was gone. Now, Firestar needs to decide who should be deputy. He sends Leafpool to the Moonpool, a special place, to ask StarClan for advice. StarClan tells Leafpool that Firestar must make his own choice. Jaypaw secretly follows Leafpool and surprises her. In the end, Brambleclaw stays as deputy because he knows the Clan and their new home better.
New Paths and Powers
During a battle with ShadowClan, Jaypaw, who is blind, can only defeat an enemy cat with his sibling's help. Hollypaw finds that fighting is much more exciting than learning about herbs. Jaypaw also has a dream from StarClan. He learns he must become a medicine cat because he has a special gift: he can walk in other cats' dreams. Hollypaw and Jaypaw decide to switch roles. Jaypaw becomes Leafpool's apprentice, and Hollypaw becomes Brackenfur's apprentice, training to be a warrior.
At the next Gathering, the Clans start arguing. To solve this, Squirrelflight suggests a special Gathering. At this meeting, the apprentices from each Clan would compete in different challenges. These challenges include tree climbing, hunting, and fighting.
Jaypaw is sad that he cannot compete. While staying at camp, he has a vision. He feels like he is choking on dirt and smells badgers and foxes. He realizes he is seeing through Lionpaw's eyes. It turns out that Lionpaw and Breezepaw fell into a collapsing badger den during the competition. Luckily, Jaypaw gets there in time to help save them with Crowfeather. The leaders decide that since every Clan won something, it's a tie, and no Clan wins overall.
The Prophecy Revealed
At the end of the book, Jaypaw enters Firestar's dream. He hears the important prophecy: "There will be three, kin of your kin, who hold the power of the stars in their paws." Jaypaw realizes that he and his siblings are the cats mentioned in this prophecy. He then thinks, "One day we will be so powerful that we shall command even StarClan!"
