The Sisters, or Rangitatahi in Māori, is a group of three islands. They are located about 16 kilometers (10 miles) north of Cape Pattison, Chatham Island. These islands are the most northern part of the Chatham Archipelago. This archipelago is about 800 kilometers (500 miles) east of New Zealand's South Island.
The three islands in this group are:
- Big Sister (also called Rangitatahi itself)
- Middle Sister (also called Te Awanui)
- Little Sister
Amazing Animals on The Sisters
The Sisters islands are a very important home for many kinds of birds. They have the second largest breeding colony of the northern royal albatross. This means many of these huge birds come here to lay their eggs and raise their chicks.
Other birds that use these islands for breeding include:
- Buller's albatross
- northern giant petrel
- fairy prion
- broad-billed prion
- sooty shearwater
- common diving petrel
- grey-backed storm petrel
- white-faced storm petrel
- pitt shag
- subantarctic skua
- red-billed gull
- white-fronted tern
Because so many important birds live and breed here, BirdLife International has named The Sisters an Important Bird Area. This helps protect the birds, especially the Buller's albatrosses and northern giant petrels.
The islands are also home to a special insect. A type of stag beetle called Geodorcus sororum lives only on these islands. It cannot be found anywhere else in the world!
