The Tenth City is an exciting fantasy novel for young readers. It is the third book in Patrick Carman's popular series, The Land of Elyon. This story continues the adventures of Alexa and her friends in a magical world.

The Adventure Begins

The story of The Tenth City starts right after the last book, Beyond the Valley of Thorns, ended. Alexa and her friends had just escaped the crashing Dark Tower. Thirteen-year-old Alexa and her friends – Thomas, Roland, Balmoral, Odessa, Catherine, and Armon – were on the ship Warwick Beacon. They were sailing on the dark and lonely sea. Alexa still had the last Jocasta, a special stone. It let her talk to forest animals and hear the wise voice of Elyon.

A Journey Through Storms

After dropping off Catherine in Lathbury and Balmoral in Castalia, Elyon guided the crew. They sailed into stormy waters, where they discovered secret cliffs near Turlock. On their journey, they faced strong winds and a huge swarm of evil bats. They also learned about a secret shortcut back to Bridewell. Alexa found out that Bridewell was now empty, except for Grindall and his ogres. She also learned that her friend Yipes was being held captive there.

Rescuing Yipes

With help from Pervis, Alexa and Murphy crawled through a secret tunnel. It led them back to the library at Renny Lodge. There, Yipes was locked in a small cage. Alexa burst through the secret door, and Armon leaped into the room through a window. Armon quickly threw the ogre guard into the courtyard below. Alexa and Murphy grabbed the cage and escaped back through the secret tunnel. They slammed the door shut, leaving Grindall screaming with anger.

Alexa and Murphy rushed back to where they first met Ander, the grizzly bear and forest king. They also met the forest council there. When their lantern went out, they used the glowing orange Jocasta to light their way. But when they arrived, they were shocked. All the animals were gone, the green forest had withered, and only stones remained.

The Path to the Tenth City

Ander told Alexa that the last Jocasta would show them the way to the Tenth City. They just needed to reach Sly Field. But then, Grindall and his army of ogres, along with Odessa, surrounded them. Alexa, Warvold, Armon, and Yipes had to surrender. They were forced to lead Grindall to Sly Field. The ogres ran the whole way, carrying Grindall and Odessa in a fancy chair.

As a fast-moving white cloud surrounded them, they followed the orange light from the Jocasta. It led them towards The Tenth City. Soon, they were covered in dust and a dark cloud of thousands of black bats. In all the confusion, Armon bravely killed three ogres and freed Yipes. Murphy snatched the Jocasta from Grindall's hands. Grindall then ordered his forces to attack Elyon and take control of the Tenth City. When the bats, Grindall, and the ogres charged into the mist, they were all sucked back into a dark place. They could never escape from there.

A Clever Plan and New Discoveries

Alexa and Murphy had a brilliant plan. They managed to trick and free their world from the terrible forces of Abaddon, Grindall, and his ogres. They stopped them before they could destroy Elyon or the Tenth City. It turned out to be the same cliff where Armon, Alexa, and Murphy had swum ashore from the Warwick Beacon. Alexa realized that Elyon and the beautiful, mystical Tenth City would always be there for them. She also understood that Odessa had not betrayed them. Alexa had asked Odessa to help lure Grindall and his ogres to Sly Field, where they could be defeated.

When everything became calm, Armon went back into Sly Field to look for Warvold. He returned with Warvold's body. Then Alexa used the Jocasta again to show the way to the Tenth City. As the clouds cleared, Elyon spoke. Elyon invited Armon to bring Alexa's father home. It was then that Alexa realized her real parents were Thomas and Catherine (Renny) Warvold, not James and Laura Daley. It was a wonderful sight: Armon, John Christopher, and Warvold were standing together, alive again and smiling.

Home and New Journeys

As Alexa, Murphy, Odessa, and Yipes headed home, the Fenwick Forest magically turned back into a lush green place. All the forest animals had returned: Ander (the grizzly bear and forest king), Beaker (raccoon), Raymond (fox), Henry (badger), Picardy (female black bear), Boone (bobcat), Malcolm (rabbit), Vesper (woodchuck), Darius (wolf), and Sherwin (Darius’ son).

When Alexa finally returned home to Lathbury, she asked her father to tell her the story about how the walls were built. It was just like he had told her the very first time. The story ends with Alexa, Yipes, and Roland setting off on another journey. They are on the deck of the Warwick Beacon, ready for new adventures.
