The Twelve Imams facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Twelve Imams (Arabic: ٱلَأَئِمَّة ٱلْٱثْنَا عَشَر, al-ʾAʾimmah al-ʾIthnā ʿAšar; Persian: دوازده امامان, Davâzdah Emāmân) are important leaders in the Twelver branch of Shī‘ah Islam. They are seen as the spiritual and political successors to Prophet Muhammad.

Twelver Shia Muslims believe these twelve leaders were chosen by Allah (God) to guide Muslims and protect the religion. They are considered "infallible," meaning they are free from sin and error. It is also believed that Prophet Muhammad spoke about the coming of these Twelve Imams.

Shia Muslims believe these Imams have special knowledge given to them by God. Ali ibn Abi Talib was the first Imam in this line. Each Imam after him was the son of the previous Imam, except for Husayn ibn Ali, who was the brother of Hasan ibn Ali. The last Imam is Imam al-Mahdi. He is believed to be alive and will appear again at the end of time to bring justice to the world.

Who Are the Twelve Imams?

The Twelve Imams are a series of leaders who followed Prophet Muhammad. They are central to the beliefs of Twelver Shia Islam. Each Imam had a specific role in guiding the Muslim community.

The First Imam: Ali ibn Abi Talib

The first Imam was Ali ibn Abi Talib. He was Prophet Muhammad's cousin and son-in-law. Shia Muslims believe Ali was chosen by God and Prophet Muhammad to lead the Muslim community after the Prophet's death.

The Lineage of Imams

After Ali, the leadership passed down through his family. Most of the Imams were the sons of the previous Imam. This created a direct line of spiritual guidance.

Hasan and Husayn

The second Imam was Hasan ibn Ali, Ali's eldest son. The third Imam was Husayn ibn Ali, Hasan's brother and Ali's younger son. Husayn is especially important in Shia Islam due to his sacrifice.

The Hidden Imam: Muhammad al-Mahdi

The twelfth and last Imam is Imam al-Mahdi. Twelver Shia Muslims believe he went into a "Greater Occultation" (meaning he is hidden from view) and will return when God wills it. His return is expected to bring peace and justice to the world.
