It is an important part of the DeFuniak Springs Historic District, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.
Discovering The Vicarage: A Historic Florida Home
The Vicarage is a beautiful example of old Florida architecture. It was built in 1889, making it over 130 years old! This house shows a style called Florida cracker architecture, which means it was built using local materials and methods.
A Look Back: The House's Early Days
When it was first built, The Vicarage had an identical twin house right next to it on Circle Drive. That twin house has since been moved to a different spot. For many years, The Vicarage was a private home. Sometimes, it even served as a boarding house. Visitors coming to the famous Chautauqua events in DeFuniak Springs would stay there. The Chautauqua was a popular educational and cultural gathering.
Becoming The Vicarage: A Church Home
In 1977, St. Agatha's Episcopal Church bought the house. The church, which was built in 1896, needed a home for its vicar (a type of church leader). Funds for buying the house came from Violet Horn McLendon. She was from Marianna, Florida.
Today, the house is used by the church. The second floor is where the vicar and their family live. The first floor has rooms and a kitchen that are shared with the church members. These areas are used as the church's parish hall, a place for meetings and community events.
