The Wonder Spot facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Wonder Spot was a popular tourist attraction in Lake Delton, Wisconsin. It was open from 1949 until 2006. Many people visiting the nearby vacation area of Wisconsin Dells would stop by. The Wonder Spot was famous for seeming to defy gravity!

What Was The Wonder Spot?

When you visited the Wonder Spot, you would walk down into a small valley, called a ravine. There, you would find a cabin. Inside this cabin, strange things seemed to happen:

  • It felt like you couldn't stand up straight.
  • Water appeared to flow uphill or backward.
  • Chairs could be balanced on just two legs, which seemed impossible!

The Secret Behind the Illusions

The guides at the Wonder Spot would tell visitors that special igneous rock formations caused these strange effects. Igneous rocks are formed from cooled lava or magma. However, the real reason for the "magic" was much simpler!

The cabin was actually built on a slope, but it was tilted in a way that tricked your eyes. All the amazing things you saw were just optical illusions. An optical illusion is something that fools your brain into seeing something that isn't really there. It was a clever trick that made the Wonder Spot so much fun!

The Wonder Spot's History

The Wonder Spot was first opened in 1952 by Louis Dauterman from Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. Later, in 1988, a man named Bill Carney bought the attraction.

Why Did It Close?

During the mid-1990s, the Wonder Spot was very popular. Bill Carney said that as many as 50,000 people visited each year! But over time, bigger and more modern theme parks and water parks started opening in the Wisconsin Dells area. These new attractions offered different kinds of fun, and fewer people came to the Wonder Spot.

Because of this, Bill Carney decided to sell the Wonder Spot in 2006. The village of Lake Delton bought the land for $300,000. They planned to build a new road nearby. When it closed, the Wonder Spot was the oldest attraction in the Wisconsin Dells area that had a special permit to operate.

Some items from the Wonder Spot, like a chair and a can used for the water trick, were given to the Wisconsin Historical Society. This means they are now kept safe as part of history!
