Thea Doelwijt (born December 3, 1938) is a famous writer from Suriname and the Netherlands. She has written many books, plays, and musicals.

The Life of Thea Doelwijt

Thea Doelwijt's father was from Suriname and her mother was from the Netherlands. In 1961, she moved to Suriname. There, she worked as a journalist for a newspaper called Suriname. A journalist writes news stories for newspapers or magazines.

Early Career and Writings

From 1968 to 1969, Thea Doelwijt was the editor of a magazine named Moetete. An editor checks and prepares articles for publication. She wrote two popular novels that many people read.

During the 1970s and 1980s, she created many plays, musicals, and cabaret shows. Some of her well-known works include A Fat Black Woman Like Me and Iris. She also put together important collections of writings called anthologies. Thea Doelwijt also wrote books especially for children.

Contributions to Literature

In 2007, she helped with an English book called Diversity is power. This book was a collection of writings from Suriname. Thea Doelwijt also worked as a "writer-in-residence" in Suriname. This means she was invited to live and work there as a writer. During this time, she led big workshops to help other writers.

Awards and Recognition

Thea Doelwijt received the Governor Currie Prize in 1974. This award recognized her important work. In 1982, she moved back to the Netherlands. She then became a full-time writer, focusing completely on her craft.

In 1989, she received another award for her contributions to Surinamese culture. Since 1998, she has been a member of the Society of Dutch Literature. This is a group for important writers and scholars in the Netherlands.
