Theodore Alexander McKee was born on June 5, 1947, in Rochester, New York. He is a very experienced judge who works for the United States government. He is currently a Senior United States circuit judge. He serves on the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. Before this, he was a judge in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

His School Days
Theodore McKee went to college at the State University of New York at Cortland. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree there in 1969. After that, he went to Syracuse University College of Law to study law. He earned his law degree, called a Juris Doctor, in 1975. He was a top student and graduated with high honors.
His Legal Career
After law school, Theodore McKee worked as a private lawyer in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This was from 1975 to 1977. Then, from 1977 to 1980, he worked for the government. He was an Assistant United States Attorney. In this role, he helped investigate important cases. He looked into claims of unfair treatment by police. This was part of a big investigation across the country.
In 1980, McKee started working for the city of Philadelphia. He was a Deputy City Solicitor. He stayed in this job until 1983. After that, he became the main lawyer for the Philadelphia Parking Authority. From 1980 to 1991, he also taught law at Rutgers Law School.
His Time as a Judge
State Court Judge
In 1984, Theodore McKee was chosen to be a judge. He served on the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas. This is a local court in Pennsylvania. He worked there for ten years, until 1994.
Federal Court Judge
In 1994, President Bill Clinton chose Judge McKee for a very important job. He nominated him to be a judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. This is a federal court that hears appeals from lower courts. The United States Senate agreed to his appointment on June 8, 1994. He officially became a judge on June 9, 1994.
Judge McKee became the Chief Judge of this court on May 6, 2010. He held this leadership role until October 1, 2016. In July 2018, he made an important decision. He supported a school policy that allowed transgender students to use the locker room they felt comfortable with. This decision was agreed upon by all the judges on the panel.
In 2021, Judge McKee announced he would take "senior status." This means he would work a reduced schedule. He officially took senior status on October 20, 2022. He had served as a federal judge for 27 years.
