Theodore Alexander McKee was born on June 5, 1947, in Rochester, New York. He is a Senior United States circuit judge for the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. Before this, he worked as a judge in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Education and Early Career
Learning to Be a Lawyer
Theodore McKee went to the State University of New York at Cortland. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree there in 1969. Later, he studied law at Syracuse University College of Law. He graduated in 1975 with high honors.
Starting His Legal Journey
After law school, McKee worked as a private lawyer in Philadelphia from 1975 to 1977. Then, he became an Assistant United States Attorney. This means he worked for the government to bring cases against people who broke federal laws. He worked in different units, including one that looked into political corruption.
From 1980 to 1983, McKee worked for the City of Philadelphia. He was a Deputy City Solicitor, helping the city with legal matters. After that, he became the main lawyer for the Philadelphia Parking Authority. He also taught law at Rutgers Law School for many years.
Becoming a Judge
Serving in State Courts
In 1984, Theodore McKee was elected as a judge. He served on the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas. This is a local court that handles many different types of cases. He worked there until 1994.
Joining the Federal Court
In 1994, President Bill Clinton chose Judge McKee to become a federal judge. He was nominated to the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. This court hears appeals from federal courts in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware. The United States Senate approved his nomination, and he officially became a judge on June 9, 1994.
Judge McKee served as the Chief Judge of the Third Circuit from May 6, 2010, to October 1, 2016. The Chief Judge helps manage the court's work.
Important Decisions and Senior Status
In July 2018, Judge McKee was part of a unanimous decision. The court supported a school policy that allowed transgender students to use the locker room that matched their gender identity. This was an important ruling for student rights.
In 2021, Judge McKee announced he would take senior status. This means he would work a reduced schedule but still hear cases. He officially became a senior judge on October 20, 2022.
