Theodosia Alleine (who died in 1685) was an English writer. She was known for her strong beliefs and for writing about her husband's life. She lived during a time when many people had different ideas about religion.

The Early Life of Theodosia Alleine

Theodosia Alleine was born around 1635 in Ditcheat, Somerset, England. Her parents were Richard Alleine and Lettice Gough. Her father, Richard, was a church leader. He worked at St Mary Magdalene church.

Later, her father became a rector in Batcombe, Somerset. After a time known as the Stuart Restoration, her father and his brother became non-conformist ministers. This meant they did not follow the rules of the main church in England.

Marriage and Starting a School

Theodosia met her cousin, Joseph Alleine. In 1655, Joseph was asked to help George Newton, a minister at St Mary Magdalene, Taunton. Joseph accepted this job. Soon after, Theodosia and Joseph were married.

Theodosia was known for being good at work. She decided to open a boarding school in George Newton's house. Her school became quite popular. It often had between twenty and thirty students living there.

Challenges and Support

In 1663, Joseph's way of leading church services was not approved by the authorities. He was put in prison in Ilchester. Theodosia stayed by his side and supported him during this difficult year. Joseph was set free on May 26, 1664.

In 1665, a law called the Five Mile Act was passed. This law made it difficult for ministers who did not follow the main church. It forced them to move at least five miles away from their old churches. Joseph and Theodosia moved to a quiet place in Wellington, near Taunton.

However, they still faced problems. They often had to stay with friends. They later moved back to Taunton, to a place called Fullands. They continued to hold "secret" church services there. Joseph was arrested again in July 1655.

Her Writing Contribution

After her husband Joseph passed away, a book was created to celebrate his life. Many people contributed to this book. Theodosia wrote a biography about her husband. She thought her writing would just be a draft for someone else to finish.

However, her account was very well-liked. It was used exactly as she wrote it. She was given credit when the book was published. The book was called An Account of the Life and Death of That Excellent Minister of Christ, the Rev. Joseph Alleine. Written by Richard Baxter, Theodosia Alleine, and Other Persons, to Which are Added His Christian Letters. Joseph was buried in his church in Taunton. Theodosia later married again.
