Theognis of Megara was an ancient Greek poet. He lived around the 6th century BC. His poems are full of wise sayings and practical advice about life. He was one of the first Greek poets known to worry about his work lasting through time.

Along with famous poets like Homer, Theognis is one of the earliest whose poems have been kept safe for many centuries. More than half of the surviving ancient Greek elegiac poetry comes from his collection. Even though some poems in his collection were written by others, his work is important. It shows us a real picture of how rich people lived in ancient Greece.

The poems linked to Theognis share the views of a wealthy person. They talk about the big social and political changes happening in Greek cities long ago.

We know very little about Theognis as a person. Ancient writings don't say much. Also, many experts today question if he wrote all the poems that carry his name.

The Life of Theognis

It is hard to know much about Theognis's life. Ancient writers, his own poems, and even modern experts give different clues. Some of his poems seem to talk about events that happened at very different times.

Ancient sources give dates in the mid-500s BC for Theognis. For example, one writer, Eusebius, places him around 548–545 BC. Another source, Suda, says 544–541 BC. It is not clear if these dates are for his birth or another important event.

It is also confusing to figure out when his poems were written. Some lines seem to describe the political scene in Megara before a ruler named Theagenes, which was in the late 600s BC. Other lines talk about a war in Euboea in the early 500s BC. Still others might refer to the Persian invasion of Greece in the early 400s BC.

Because of these different time clues, modern experts have different ideas about when Theognis was born. Some think he was born around 600 BC. Others believe he was born closer to 550 BC.

There is also confusion about his birthplace. Some ancient writers thought he was from Megara Hyblaea in Sicily. Others believed he was from Megara in mainland Greece. One idea is that he was born in mainland Megara and later moved to Sicily.

Most modern experts think he was born in mainland Greek Megara. However, his poems could fit in with life almost anywhere in ancient Greece. His poems show him as a wise person who followed the traditional Greek ideas of right and wrong.

The Work of Theognis

How His Poems Survived

Theognis was seen as a wise teacher. This good reputation likely helped his poems survive through the Byzantine period. However, we know that not all of his poems have lasted. The surviving writings are a collection of ancient elegiac poems. This collection includes works from other poets, like Tyrtaeus. Experts do not always agree on which parts were actually written by Theognis.

The collection exists in more than forty old manuscripts. These are continuous lines of poetry that modern editors now divide into 300 to 400 "poems." The best of these manuscripts is from the early 10th century. It includes a section called "Book 2," which has about a hundred more poems. The quality of the writing in this last section varies a lot. The rest of his work also raises questions about if it is truly all his.

What His Poems Are About

All the poems linked to Theognis talk about topics often discussed at aristocratic parties. A symposium was a social gathering where men would drink, eat, and discuss many things.

Theognis's poems cover many subjects. These include politics, friendship, war, and how short life is. They also talk about human nature, wealth, and love.

The Poetic Style of Theognis

Theognis wrote in the ancient elegiac style. In English, an "elegy" often means a sad poem. But in ancient Greece, it was a very flexible type of poetry. It was used for parties and public events. It could encourage bravery in war or talk about love.

Elegiac poetry combined the long lines of epic poems with shorter lines. These poems were often sung with music from an aulos, which was like a pipe. Theognis used language in a traditional way. He often copied the style of Homer's epic poems. He even used Homer's Ionian dialect, not the Dorian dialect spoken in Megara. He also borrowed ideas and even whole lines from other elegiac poets.

His poems are not always smooth or perfectly built. However, he often places important words in just the right spot for a strong effect. He also uses language tricks, like asyndeton, which is common in everyday speech. He was good at creating striking images and memorable short sayings.
