Therese Johaug (born June 25, 1988) is a famous Norwegian cross-country skier. She comes from a village called Dalsbygda in Os Municipality. Therese is known for winning many medals in big competitions.

She has won 10 individual gold medals and 4 gold medals in team races at the World Ski Championships. She also has 4 gold medals from the Olympic Games.

On March 4, 2022, Therese Johaug announced that she would stop competing in professional cross-country skiing after the 2021–2022 season.

Therese Johaug's Skiing Journey

Therese Johaug started her professional skiing career in 2006. In 2007, she competed in the Norwegian Championships. She won a bronze medal in a 15 km double pursuit race.

Soon after, she was chosen for two World Cup races. She did well enough to be picked for the 30 km race at the 2007 World Championships in Sapporo. There, she surprisingly won a bronze medal.

Olympic Games Success

At the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Therese won a gold medal. This was for the 4 × 5 km relay race with her team. She also finished sixth in the 15 km pursuit and seventh in the 30 km mass start race.

In 2014, at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, she won a silver medal in the 30 km mass start. She also earned a bronze medal in the 10 km classical race.

Therese continued her Olympic success at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. She won three gold medals! These were in the 15 km skiathlon, 30 km freestyle, and 10 km classical races.

World Championship Highlights

Therese won her first individual gold medal at the 2011 World Championships in Oslo. This was in the 30 km mass start race. She also helped her team win gold in the 4 x 5 km relay. She got a bronze in the 15 km double pursuit.

At the 2013 World Championships, she won her second individual gold medal. This was in the 10 km freestyle race.

Her best World Championship was in Falun in 2015. She won three gold medals there. Two were in individual events: the 15 km skiathlon and the 30 km classic mass start. The third was with her team in the 4x5km relay.

In 2019, at the World Championships in Seefeld, she won three more gold medals. These were for the 15 km skiathlon, 10 km classical, and 30 km freestyle races.

She continued her winning streak at the 2021 World Championships in Oberstdorf. She won four gold medals! These included the 15 km skiathlon, 10 km freestyle, 30 km classical, and the 4 x 5 km relay.

World Cup Achievements

Therese Johaug and her teammate Martin Johnsrud Sundby made history in 2013–14. They were the first Norwegians to win the Tour de Ski. This is a very tough multi-stage race.

After that, Therese won the overall and distance competitions in the 2013–14 FIS Cross-Country World Cup. This means she was the best skier in the whole World Cup season for both overall and long-distance races.

She had her best World Cup season in 2015–16. She won her second Tour de Ski. She also won the overall and distance World Cups again. She finished the season by winning the first-ever Ski Tour Canada.

In August 2019, Therese also showed her talent in running. She competed in the Norwegian national athletics championship. She won the 10,000 metres race!
