Thiago Soares (born May 18, 1981) is a famous ballet dancer and choreographer from Brazil. He used to be a main dancer, called a principal dancer, with The Royal Ballet in London, England. He has also performed as a special guest dancer in many other theaters worldwide.

Early Life and Dance Beginnings

Thiago Soares was born in 1981 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. His journey into dance started with a street dance hip hop group. He was part of this group in Vila Isabel, a neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro.

When he was 13, Thiago received a special scholarship. This scholarship allowed him to train to become a professional dancer. He studied at the Centre for Dance Rio and finished his training in 1998.

Thiago's Amazing Dance Career

Thiago Soares joined the Municipal Theatre Ballet in Rio de Janeiro in 1998. There, he performed many important roles.

In 2002, Thiago trained for a short time with the Kirov Ballet. He also danced with the Russian State Ballet. With them, he performed as Siegfried, Basilio, and Prince Desire.

Joining The Royal Ballet

Thiago Soares joined The Royal Ballet in London in 2002. He started as a First Artist. He quickly moved up through the ranks.

  • In September 2003, he became a Soloist.
  • In September 2004, he was promoted to First Soloist.
  • Finally, in September 2006, he became a Principal Dancer. This is the highest level for a ballet dancer.
  • From 2017 to 2019, he was a principal guest dancer.

During his time at The Royal Ballet, Thiago performed in many classic ballets. He also danced in modern works.

Famous Roles and Performances

Thiago's roles included the main character in John Cranko's Onegin. He was Siegfried in Anthony Dowell's Swan Lake. He also played the Prince in Peter Wright's The Nutcracker.

Awards and Recognition

Thiago Soares has won many important awards for his dancing.

  • In 1998, he won a silver medal at the Paris International Dance Competition.
  • In 2001, he won a gold medal at the Moscow International Ballet Competition at the Bolshoi Theatre.
  • In 2004, he received the "Outstanding Classical Dancer" award at the UK Critic's Circle National Dance Awards.
  • In 2018, the Brazilian government honored him with the Medal of Cavalier of the Order of Rio Branco. This was for his great work in the Arts.
  • In 2020, he received an honorary doctorate from King's College London.

Personal Life

Thiago Soares was married to fellow dancer Marianela Núñez. They often performed together as dance partners. They got married in Buenos Aires in July 2011. They separated in 2014 and announced their divorce in January 2016. Even after their divorce, they remained good friends and continued to dance together.

  • In 2005, he performed as Orion in a filmed version of Sylvia. He danced alongside Darcey Bussell as Sylvia and Roberto Bolle as Aminta. This performance was later released on DVD.
