Thomas Arthur was born in Limerick, Ireland. His family was well-known in the city. Many of his relatives held important jobs in the local government. His father's name was William, so Thomas sometimes called himself "Thomas Arthur Fitz-William," which meant "Thomas Arthur, son of William."
Early Life and Education
Thomas Arthur traveled to France for his education. He studied in Bordeaux and then learned medicine in Paris. This was a common path for many people seeking advanced education during his time.
A Doctor's Journey
In May 1619, Thomas Arthur returned to Ireland. He started his medical practice in Limerick. He quickly became known as a very skilled doctor.
In April 1624, he opened another practice in Dublin, the capital city. He spent most of his time there but still visited Limerick to see patients. By 1630, he moved his whole family to Dublin.
Famous Patients and Success
Thomas Arthur kept a detailed record of all his patients and the fees he received. This record covers the years from 1619 to 1666. The last date, 1666, is likely the year he passed away.
One of his most famous patients was Archbishop Usher. Other doctors in England had tried to help the Archbishop, but they couldn't figure out his illness. Thomas Arthur successfully treated him in 1626. This success made him very well-known.
His good reputation also earned him the support of the Lord Deputy, Henry Cary, 1st Viscount Falkland. The Lord Deputy was a very important official who governed Ireland for the King of England.
His Writings and Legacy
Thomas Arthur's personal record book also shows how he slowly bought more land over time. He also wrote some poems in Latin. One of his most important writings was a family history called "Edylium genealogicum." In this long poem, he wrote about his ancestors and shared details about his own life.
