Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Thomas Bond (born in 1765, died in 1837) was a British writer who studied and described places. He was born in Looe, a town in Cornwall, England. His father, also named Thomas Bond, was a JP, which means he helped keep law and order in the community.

Thomas Bond's Life and Work

Thomas Bond was a lawyer, known as a solicitor, and he knew a lot about the law. In 1789, he became the town clerk for both East Looe and West Looe. A town clerk is an important person who manages official records and helps run the town. This happened in the same year his father became the Mayor of East Looe.

In 1823, while still working as a town clerk, Thomas Bond published an important book. It was called Topographical and Historical Sketches of the Boroughs of East and West Looe, in the County of Cornwall. This book described the history and interesting sights of East and West Looe. It also talked about the beautiful scenery and natural wonders nearby. He wrote it because he truly loved the area.

His book included pictures of Looe drawn by his relative, Mrs. Davies Gilbert. The book showed how places near Plymouth, like Looe, were popular spots for people to visit in the summer for their health and for fun holidays. Thomas Bond also wrote articles for the Journal of the Royal Institution of Cornwall.

Thomas Bond loved to read and had a deep understanding of property laws. He was highly respected in East Looe and passed away there on December 18, 1837. He never married, so he left most of his property to Davies Gilbert FRS, who was one of his closest relatives.

He was buried at St Martin-by-Looe.
