Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Thomas Bulkeley (born around 1633 – died 1708) was an important Welsh politician from Caernarvonshire. He served in the government during a time when England and Wales were becoming more connected.

Family Life

Thomas Bulkeley was the fourth son of Thomas Bulkeley, 1st Viscount Bulkeley. A Viscount is a type of noble title, like a lord, but a bit lower than an Earl. His mother was Blanche Coytmore.

Thomas Bulkeley married a woman named Jane. She was from a place called Castellmarch in Carnarvonshire. Jane had been married before to Thomas Williams of Dinas. Thomas and Jane Bulkeley did not have any children together.

Education and Political Career

Thomas Bulkeley started studying at Jesus College, Oxford, which is a famous university, in 1652. Later, in 1654, he joined Gray's Inn. This was a place where people studied to become lawyers.

Thomas Bulkeley became a Member of Parliament, often called an MP. An MP is someone who is elected by people to represent them in the country's government. He served in the Parliament of England, which was the main law-making body for England and Wales at the time.

He represented several different areas (called constituencies) during his career:

  • Beaumaris from 1690 to 1695.
  • Caernarvonshire for several periods: 1679 to 1681, 1685 to 1687, and again from 1697 to 1705.
  • Anglesey from 1689 to 1690.
  • Caernarvon Boroughs from 1705 until his death in 1708.

After 1707, the Parliament of England joined with the Parliament of Scotland to form the Parliament of Great Britain. So, in his last years as an MP, Thomas Bulkeley was a member of this new, larger Parliament.
