Thomas Carney's Early Life
Thomas Carney was born on August 20, 1824, in Delaware County, Ohio. His parents were James and Jane Carney. When Thomas was young, his father passed away. This meant his mother had to raise four sons on her own.
Thomas helped his mother on their farm until he was 19 years old. He also studied in Berkshire, Ohio, where he lived with an uncle. He learned a lot about business during this time.
Starting a Business and Family
Thomas Carney became very good at business. He moved to Leavenworth, Kansas, and started a successful wholesale company. This company bought and sold goods in large amounts.
In 1861, the people of Kansas elected him to the Kansas Legislature. This meant he helped make laws for the state. On November 13, 1861, he married Rebecca Ann Cannady.
Serving as Governor of Kansas
After being a state representative, Thomas Carney was elected Governor of Kansas. He served as governor from 1863 to 1865. This was a challenging time because the American Civil War was happening.
As governor, Carney focused on two main things:
- Developing the state of Kansas.
- Solving problems caused by the Civil War.
He worked hard to help Kansas grow and deal with the war's effects.
Later Life and Passing
After his time as governor, Carney continued to be active. In 1865, he was elected Mayor of Leavenworth. He also started the First National Bank of Leavenworth. He was involved with the Lawrence and Fort Gibson Railroad Company too.
Thomas Carney continued his business work until 1875. He passed away on July 28, 1888, in Leavenworth, Kansas, due to a sudden illness. He was buried in Mount Muncie Cemetery in Leavenworth.
