Thomas Cooper (Parliamentarian) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Thomas Cooper (who passed away in 1659) was an important person during a time of big changes in England. He was a colonel, a high-ranking soldier, in the army that supported the Parliament. This army fought in the English Civil War. He also helped England take control of Ireland. Later, he became a member of a special government group called Cromwell's Upper House.

Who Was Thomas Cooper?

Thomas Cooper came from an old and respected family in a place called Oxfordshire. His family had owned land there, including a large estate called South Weston, for many hundreds of years.

Early Life and Political Start

Thomas Cooper was a leader in the city of Oxford. He was an 'alderman', which is like a city council member today. In 1640, King Charles I called a meeting of Parliament. This was known as the Short Parliament. Thomas Cooper was chosen to represent Oxford in this meeting.

However, the King quickly ended the Short Parliament. But Thomas Cooper was chosen again to be a Member of Parliament for Oxford. This time, it was for the Long Parliament, which lasted much longer.

Fighting in the English Civil War

As the country moved towards war, Thomas Cooper joined the Parliament's army. He rose through the ranks and became a Colonel of foot soldiers. This meant he led a large group of infantry. In 1651, he went with Oliver Cromwell, a very powerful leader, to Scotland.

Role in Ireland and Parliament

After his time in Scotland, Thomas Cooper was sent to Ireland. He played a part in England's control over Ireland. In 1656, he was chosen to represent three counties in Ireland: Down, Antrim, and Armagh.

Later, he was asked to join Cromwell's Upper House. This was a special group of people who helped Oliver Cromwell govern England. Thomas Cooper accepted this important role. His name is even on the official paper that announced Richard Cromwell as the new leader after Oliver Cromwell died.

After Cromwell

It's not fully known how much wealth Thomas Cooper gained during this time. However, he likely gained a lot. Even though his family faced difficulties when the King returned to power in the English Restoration, his descendant, also named Thomas Cooper, inherited a lot of land. This included the South Weston estate and other properties in Oxfordshire, which were worth a lot of money.]
