Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sir Thomas Hackett (who died in 1706) was an important Irish official and a successful merchant. He was a supporter of the Jacobites, a group who wanted King James II to stay on the throne.

Life of Sir Thomas Hackett

Sir Thomas Hackett was the son of James Hackett and Alison White. He started working in international trade from Dublin by 1666. This means he bought and sold goods with other countries. He also became a banker, helping to manage money for many important Roman Catholic families in Ireland.

His Time as a Leader

In October 1687, King James II of England gave him the special title of "Sir." The King also chose him to be the Lord Mayor of Dublin. This was a very important job, like being the main leader of the city.

In 1689, Sir Thomas Hackett became a Member of Parliament for a place called Portarlington. This meant he helped make laws in the Irish Parliament. He was also made a Deputy Lieutenant of Dublin and a justice of the peace, which meant he helped keep order and fairness in the city.

Challenges and Later Life

In 1690, the Jacobites lost a big fight in Ireland. Because Sir Thomas Hackett supported them, he lost most of his property and ended up owing a lot of money.

In 1694, he was allowed to travel to the Dutch Republic. People from the English government watched him closely there. They thought he might still be working for the Jacobite court, which was in exile in France.

By 1700, he was given legal protection in Dublin after he helped with a legal case about lands that had been taken away. However, by 1705, he was put in prison in Dublin because of his debts. Sir Thomas Hackett passed away the next year, in 1706.
