Hotel History
The Start of Red Boiling Springs
In the 1880s, many places with natural mineral springs became popular summer vacation spots. This trend was inspired by the success of Saratoga Springs, New York. Early in this time, a businessman from New York named James F. O. Shaughnessy bought the land at Red Boiling Springs. He then started to develop the area into a resort.
Building the Cloyd Hotel
To welcome all the visitors who came for the mineral springs, local store owners Zack and Clay Cloyd built the first Cloyd Hotel in 1890. This hotel was a two-story white building made of wood. It had long porches on both floors, much like the Donoho Hotel that you can still see today.
Fires and Rebuilding
Sadly, the first Cloyd Hotel was destroyed by a fire in 1924. But the Cloyd family quickly rebuilt! The current hotel, which is a two-story red brick building with a grand entrance, was finished in 1927. Later, in the 1990s, another fire damaged one part of the hotel. That section was also rebuilt, keeping the hotel's history alive.
Haunted Stories
The Thomas House Hotel became very well-known in the early 2010s. This was because it was featured on several TV shows that looked into paranormal activity, like the SyFy channel's Ghost Hunters. Since then, ghost hunts have become a popular activity for tourists visiting the town.
Reported Ghostly Activity
Many people believe that Room 37 is the main spot for strange happenings. One ghost is said to be the spirit of Sarah Cloyd. She was the young daughter of one of the Cloyd brothers. Another ghost might be a guest who fell from a horse and drowned in a nearby stream. These stories add to the hotel's mysterious charm!
